Four celebrities, including Valerie Bertinelli, Elle MacPherson, Brad Pitt, and Rob Lowe, share how sobriety has positively impacted their lives.
Bertinelli opted to continue his abstinence from alcohol following Dry January.
Valerie Bertinelli is among the celebrities who have chosen to abandon their party lifestyle.
Bertinelli, the Food Network star, gave up alcohol for two reasons after successfully completing Dry January and is now approaching her one-year sobriety milestone.
"Bertinelli shared on her Instagram story that she has chosen to participate in Dry January. She stated that she enjoys the experience so far and has two reasons for doing it. Firstly, she aims to reduce her sugar cravings. Secondly, she believes that alcohol intensifies those cravings."
She stated, "I want to reduce the cortisol levels in my body, which have been high for the past five to six years. I've been in a constant state of fight, flight, freeze, and fawn mode. I want to switch to rest and digest mode." She added, "I believe cutting alcohol will aid me in achieving this."
After a month, Bertinelli disclosed the positive impact: she shed pounds.
""As a result of Dry January, I can now comfortably wear looser jeans," she stated in a TikTok video."
Other stars have remained committed to their sobriety for many years.
Elle MacPherson
In 2023, supermodel Elle MacPherson celebrated the 20th anniversary of her sobriety.
In an interview with Australian magazine Body + Soul in November 2023, Macpherson revealed that his decision to get sober in 2003 was a turning point in his life, allowing him to gain a deeper understanding of himself.
She stated that she has never regretted her decision.
"Despite the need for self-control and determination, being well and fully engaged in life necessitates being present and well, and alcohol hinders this. It is challenging to understand oneself when under the influence."
MacPherson is not the only star that has been sober for decades.
Rob Lowe
In May 2023, Rob Lowe marked his 33rd anniversary of being sober and shared on Instagram how thankful he is for the "recovery and community" that has helped him stay on track.
He stated that if someone is struggling with addiction, hope and joy are available if they desire it and are willing to work for it.
In 2021, Lowe discussed his addiction with Variety, revealing that he started drinking as a teenager and his addiction worsened when he began acting and was exposed to drugs. He eventually got sober in 1990.
"According to the outlet, the only way to become sober is through personal desire. No external threat, such as losing a marriage, job, or being incarcerated, can force someone to quit drinking. It must come from within. The reason people don't achieve complete sobriety when they enter programs is because they are not yet ready to use the tools."
Bradley Cooper
In 2023, Bradley Cooper shared his story of staying sober since the age of 29 during an episode of "Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge." He considered himself fortunate for achieving this milestone.
In "A Star is Born," Cooper revealed to Bear Grylls how his past struggles with addiction aided him in portraying his character.
"Being able to truly enter into that space made it easier for me," he said on the show. "Thankfully, I was at a point in my life where I felt comfortable with everything, so I could fully let go. I've been fortunate with the roles I've played. It's been a blessing. I hope I get to continue doing it."
Brad Pitt
In 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, prompting the actor to become sober. He revealed in September 2019 that he had removed his drinking privileges, stating, "I had pushed things to their limits, so I decided to abstain from alcohol."
Pitt thanked Cooper for aiding him in his sobriety during his acceptance speech for "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" at the 2020 National Board of Review Awards, stating that his life has been happier ever since.
In a June 2022 interview with GQ, Pitt revealed how Alcoholics Anonymous aided him.
"He shared with the outlet that he had a private and exclusive men's group, which ensured safety. He emphasized that he had witnessed others being recorded while sharing personal information, which he found unacceptable."
Pitt revealed in an interview that he quit smoking cigarettes during the pandemic, stating, "I can't control myself with just one or two a day." In 2023, Pitt launched a new gin but is reportedly still sober.
