Following a dementia diagnosis, Brian Wilson's family seeks legal guardianship.
After the passing of his wife, Melinda, the family filed for the conservatorship of Wilson.
The Beach Boys co-founder, Brian Wilson, was placed under a conservatorship by his family after being diagnosed with dementia, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
The recent passing of Brian's wife, Melinda Wilson, and the resulting diagnosis prompted his family and doctors to make the decision.
After the passing of his wife Melinda, Brian, with the input of his seven children, Gloria Ramos, and his doctors, has decided to appoint LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers as his co-conservators of the person, in accordance with the family processes established by Brian and Melinda.
"To guarantee that the household remains unchanged and Brian and his children are taken care of, Gloria Ramos and her team at the house, who have been in place for many years, will continue to provide care for the family. This decision will allow Brian to enjoy his family and friends, work on his current projects, and participate in any activities he chooses."
According to a court document obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital, before her death, Melinda fulfilled Brian's "daily living needs" by providing for his physical health, food, clothing, and shelter. In his advance health care directive, Melinda was designated as his healthcare agent. However, there was no successor named before her passing.
The family is requesting the court to authorize "placement or treatment for a significant cognitive impairment (like dementia)."
A court declaration from a doctor states that Wilson is unable to administer his own medication or follow his medication schedule. Additionally, he has difficulty managing his emotions and controlling his mood.
"Dr. Stephen S. Marmer wrote in a document obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital that he can follow instructions on occasion for short periods of time, except during voice lessons or physical therapy. This is due to long-standing muscle memory, which is more a sign of reflex than cognition."
Wilson announced the death of his wife on Jan. 30.
"My heart is shattered. My cherished wife of 28 years, Melinda, passed away this morning. Our five children and I are devastated. We are adrift. Melinda was more than my wife; she was my savior who provided me with the emotional stability to excel in my career."
"She was not only a model, our fathers savior, and a mother, but also a woman empowered by her spirit with a mission to better everyone she touched. We will miss her but cherish everything she has taught us," he continued.
In 1986, Brian bought a car from Melinda, who was a model at the time. They started dating and eventually got married in 1995. Their marriage lasted for nearly 30 years until Melinda passed away.
Brian Wilson, a member of The Beach Boys, and Melina adopted five children, Dakota Rose, Daria Rose, Delanie Rose, Dylan, and Dash, while married. Additionally, Brian has two daughters with his first wife, Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford.
In 1999, Melinda revealed to Rolling Stone that her job as Brian's manager involved mainly negotiating, which she did daily while selling cars.
The Beach Boys were initially comprised of Brian and his siblings, Carl and Dennis. Later, they were joined by their cousin, Mike Love, and a school friend, Al Jardine.
In 1962, the group inked a deal with Capitol Records and put out the album "Surfin' Safari."
Over 100 million records sold worldwide, the rock band is one of the most commercially successful groups of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
The Beach Boys are best recognized for hits such as "Good Vibrations," "God Only Knows," "California Girls," "I Get Around," and "Fun, Fun, Fun."
