Expert reveals that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are considering a "Golden Visa" in Portugal as they feel restricted in their UK home.
It is said that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex bought a vacation home in Portugal, where Princess Eugenie resides with her family part-time.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to be laying down roots overseas.
The DailyMail in the U.K. reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex purchased a vacation home in Portugal. The couple, who currently reside in Montecito, California with their children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, have been spending time in the new property.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's representative did not promptly respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's inquiry for a comment.
Royal experts who have heard rumors of the reported purchase believe the location is perfect for the couple, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Reports indicate that King Charles III removed the couple from Frogmore Cottage, their U.K. residence, following the release of Harry's memoir, "Spare," in January 2023.
According to Christopher Andersen, author of "The King," the number of people inside the royal family who are willing to publicly support Harry and Meghan has significantly decreased to almost zero, as he stated to Planet Chronicle Digital.
"Prince Harry's cousin Princess Eugenie has managed to remain in the king's good graces while also supporting the Sussexes, according to Andersen."
"The proximity to a royal family member who is still fond of them is more important in purchasing a villa in Portugal than being geographically closer to Great Britain, he claimed. However, Eugenie, who is also close to William and his wife Kate Middleton, could potentially act as a mediator in the future, but it seems unlikely to happen anytime soon."
Andersen stated that King Charles and Prince William do not appear to be interested in reconciliation at the moment.
Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, own a home in a luxury development of 300 properties by the sea in Melides, as reported by the DailyMail.
Jack, 38, is a marketing and sales professional at CostaTerra, while his partner and their two children, August, 3, and Ernest, 16 months, divide their time between Portugal and London.
"Eugenie has always been very close to both Harry and Meghan, and it's no surprise that the Sussexes would find the idea of owning beachfront property at an exclusive Portuguese resort appealing. The fact that Eugenie and Jack have two young children makes it even more appealing. When the Sussexes return to Europe as a family, they will likely make a point of stopping at CostaTerra so Archie and Lili can play with August and his little brother Ernest."
"It will be intriguing to observe if CostaTerra emerges as the new Mustique, the renowned Caribbean Island haven that has attracted celebrities such as Mick Jagger and David Bowie following the late Princess Margaret's residence there," he remarked. "That royal aura is quite intoxicating."
In 2018, Queen Elizabeth II presented Frogmore Cottage to the couple as a wedding present, but the house needed renovations, causing the Sussexes to reside there for only a short period before they relinquished their positions as senior royals in 2020.
In 2019, royal accounts revealed that $3.2 million was spent on renovating the couple's house, which included structural work, rewiring, and new flooring. As part of their royal exit, the couple agreed to repay the money. In September 2020, it was announced that Harry had repaid the British taxpayers' money used for the home renovation.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were reportedly taken aback after King Charles, 75, removed them from their royal residence, according to "Finding Freedom" author Omid Scobie.
Scobie stated that the couple was given the royal boot by the king, who was "spitting mad" after "Spare" hit bookshelves. Additionally, Scobie wrote that communication between Harry and his family has reached "an all-time low."
""The family seems to want to sever ties with the couple permanently," a friend of the couple told the outlet."
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry need to find their own identity after being labeled as disloyal for criticizing the royal family.
The estate, a five-minute walk from Windsor Castle, was once the Sussexes' only secure refuge in the country. However, after stepping down as senior royals, they lost access to police protection in the country.
"Helena Chard, a British broadcaster and photographer, stated that Portugal's safety reputation will likely reassure Prince Harry's fear that everyone is trying to harm them. Many individuals are moving to Portugal due to tax incentives and the high quality of life. Additionally, the beautiful beaches will appeal to Prince Harry's love for surfing."
""Portugal's proximity to the U.K. is a positive sign that they hope to maintain peace with the royal family. Additionally, Portugal's accessibility to Europe will help maintain and strengthen connections with a wider audience. While I don't believe Prince Harry will return to royal life in the U.K., this home in Portugal allows him to improve his relationship with the royal family and visit the U.K. more frequently," she stated."
"According to royal expert Ian Pelham Turner, Harry and Meghan have decided to purchase a property in Portugal following a secret three-night stay with Eugenie and Jack. The reason for this decision is that if anything were to happen to King Charles, who is still recovering from cancer, it would be a shorter distance to travel to see him."
Since quitting royal duties, Harry has had a strained relationship with his family due to the unbearable intrusions and racist attitudes of the British press.
The father of two has detailed his rocky relationship with his family in TV interviews, a documentary, and his memoir. The couple has also aired their grievances against the monarchy in interviews and their Netflix docuseries.
Meghan, specifically, has another advantage in Portugal, as Andersen highlighted.
"It is surprising that Meghan did not receive British citizenship upon marrying Prince Harry in 2018, as she was informed that she would have to apply for it like any other person and it would take at least a year."
"Andersen stated that while Portugal offers a "Golden Visa" to wealthy investors in Portuguese real estate, it is more than just a status symbol. It allows the ultra-rich to travel throughout Europe without any hindrance. Not being dependent on a single passport is another way for the wealthy to hedge their bets."
"According to British royals expert Hilary Fordwich, Meghan, being an American, did not complete the application for British nationality before her marriage to Harry. However, purchasing a home in Portugal may enable the couple to acquire a Golden Visa, which allows those who make investments in the economies of participating countries to gain legal rights there. This visa grants free access to the Schengen Area within the European Union."
Fordwich stated that Portugal has a visa scheme that enables property owners to apply for a visa without a long residency requirement if they purchase property above a certain threshold.
"By contrast, Portugal offers a ‘Golden Visa’ to wealthy investors in Portuguese real estate. The Golden Visa is more than just a status symbol, although it certainly is that. It enables the ultra-rich to travel throughout Europe unhindered." — Christopher Andersen, author of "The King"
In 2023, Harry and Meghan visited Eugenie and Jack in Portugal after the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany. Jose Santos, head of the Alentejo Tourism Board, confirmed that the couple had stayed at CostaTerra for a brief period.
The duration of non-stop flights from Portugal to England is typically between 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours, according to the outlet. It was reported that Harry has a strong desire to visit his family and friends in his home country more often, as well as support the charities he is still connected with since his royal exit, sources close to him indicated.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
