Expert: Jay-Z Faces 'Game of Chicken' Before Sexual Assault Lawsuit
In 2000, at a VMA afterparty, Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Jay-Z are being accused of raping a 13-year-old.
Weeks after the initial lawsuit against Sean "Diddy" Combs, Jay-Z was publicly named as a defendant, sparking speculation about the legal maneuvers that occurred privately.
In 2000, a 13-year-old girl accused Jay-Z and Diddy of raping her, as previously confirmed by Planet Chronicle Digital. Before being named in the lawsuit, Jay-Z likely received a demand letter to settle the matter.
The escalation of the situation between Jay-Z's legal team and Texas-based attorney Tony Buzbee is being played out in the public eye, as Orange County criminal defense lawyer Lauren Johnson-Norris told Planet Chronicle Digital.
The timeline leading to Jay-Z being named in a bombshell lawsuit is examined by Planet Chronicle Digital.
Diddy accused of raping 13-year-old girl
In October, a lawsuit was filed in the Southern District of New York accusing Sean "Diddy" Combs of raping a 13-year-old while celebrities watched. The lawsuit was filed by Texas-based lawyer Tony Buzbee on behalf of a Jane Doe.
According to court documents, the unidentified woman ended up at a VMAs afterparty after attempting to gain entry to the awards show at Radio City Music Hall.
"The lawsuit stated that one of the limousine drivers she spoke to said he worked for Diddy and told her that Combs preferred younger girls. He also said she fit what Diddy was looking for, but did not allow her into the Awards, but invited her to an afterparty."
The girl claimed that after consuming one drink, she discovered a room where she could rest due to feeling "woozy and lightheaded." At some point, Combs and two unknown celebrities entered the room. "Celebrity A" allegedly assaulted the 13-year-old while Combs and "Celebrity B" looked on. Later, the girl claimed that Combs also assaulted her, with "Celebrity A" and "Celebrity B" present as witnesses.
Diddy denied the allegations in a statement shared with Planet Chronicle Digital.
A demand letter regarding the sexual assault lawsuit against Sean 'Diddy' Combs is received by Jay-Z.
An anonymous accuser's lawyer sent a demand letter to Jay-Z, which he confirmed in his statement denying the rape accusation.
Jay-Z stated on Roc Nation's social media that his lawyer received a blackmail attempt, known as a demand letter, from a lawyer named Tony Buzbee. The purpose of the demand was to exploit the nature of the allegations and the public scrutiny to make Jay-Z want to settle.
"I will not give you one red penny, as it had the opposite effect and made me want to expose you as a fraud in a very public manner!"
"Each side engages in a metaphoric game of chicken to see who can push the boundary further, in an attempt to get the opposite side to bend to their wishes." — Robert DeGroot, founding Partner of the Law Offices of Robert J. DeGroot
A legal expert informed Planet Chronicle Digital that the public naming of Jay-Z was likely a result of "unable to reach a settlement" in the case.
According to Robert DeGroot, founding Partner of the Law Offices of Robert J. DeGroot, Jay-Z may have believed that settling the case would imply to the public that he was involved in the sexual assault of a minor. After receiving a demand letter, Jay-Z and his legal team likely pushed back against the Plaintiff's accusations and attempted to persuade her counsel not to name him as a Defendant.
"After it became clear that they would not settle the case, the Plaintiff's attorney likely decided to proceed against Jay-Z. Both sides engage in a metaphorical game of chicken, pushing boundaries in an attempt to get the other side to bend to their wishes."
Jay-Z files lawsuit claiming extortion under ‘John Doe’
After being accused of rape in a lawsuit, Jay-Z sued the accuser's lawyer as a celebrity John Doe before being named publicly.

Buzbee was sued by Jay-Z's lawyers on Nov. 18, and the rapper later confirmed his involvement in the lawsuit.
"The court document, obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital, stated that the plaintiff was currently facing a gun to his head. Jay-Z's team claimed that Buzbee and the anonymous accuser had demanded that the rapper pay an exorbitant sum of money to stop the wide publication of wildly false allegations of sexual assault. This would subject Jay-Z to opprobrium and irreparably harm his reputation, family, career, and livelihood. If Jay-Z did not comply, he would face the threat of an untold number of civil suits and financial and personal ruin."
Legal experts asserted that demand letters are commonplace in cases involving accusations of extortion, as Jay-Z had done against Buzbee.
"Johnson-Norris stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that it is typical for these types of letters to be sent prior to filing a case or adding a defendant to one. If a case can be settled out of court, it typically benefits all parties involved. However, the defendant may feel like they are being extorted, particularly if the request is high."
Mr. Buzbee is beginning his litigation spin early to influence potential jurors and get Jay-Z's attention, given the high profile nature of the case and the likelihood of it being leaked to the press.
Jay-Z named in sexual assault lawsuit against Diddy
On Dec. 8, Jay-Z was included in Jane Doe's lawsuit against Sean "Diddy" Combs as "Celebrity A." The amended complaint, filed by Tony Buzbee, also named the rap mogul.
The 13-year-old girl, after allegedly consuming one drink, became disoriented and found a bedroom to rest in. According to the court document, Jay-Z, Diddy, and female "Celebrity B" seemingly followed the girl into the room. She immediately recognized all three celebrities.
The court document stated that Jay-Z allegedly raped the girl, followed by Diddy's alleged rape of the plaintiff, all while "celebrity B" watched.
Roc Nation shared a statement from the "Empire State of Mind" rapper denying the allegations.
The allegations are so serious that I urge you to file a criminal complaint rather than a civil one. Anyone who commits such a crime against a minor should be punished severely. The alleged victims deserve true justice if this were the case.
A legal expert predicts that the identity of "Celebrity B" will eventually be disclosed during the proceedings.
"According to DeGroot, the celebrity's status is different from that of a witness unless there is a legal reason. It seems that the celebrity does not want to be associated with Jay-Z and P. Diddy. If there is no protective order, her identity will likely be revealed during the discovery process."
"According to Johnson-Norris, it is certain that Celebrity B is communicating with Buzbee through a lawyer. She will likely cooperate in the case to differentiate herself from Diddy and Jay-Z, who were both involved in the incident. Given the information available, it is also possible that Celebrity B was a victim as well."
Jay-Z demands accuser share identity
On Dec. 9, one day after being publicly named, Jay-Z's legal team filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
The rapper's lawyer opposed the woman's request for anonymity in the case.
Jay-Z's legal team argued that the lawsuit was part of an "extortionate campaign" aimed at "forcing payment of an exorbitant sum of money," with Jay-Z having to pay millions of dollars regardless of the truth, or else face dire consequences.
The unnamed Plaintiff and her self-promoting counsel, whose name has been widely publicized, went to great lengths to stop Jay-Z from defending himself fairly. However, their efforts were unsuccessful.
