Elizabeth Taylor's affair with Richard Burton led to her feeling sick after being criticized by the Vatican.
In a new documentary titled 'Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes,' the 'Cleopatra' icon is featured.
The Vatican condemned Elizabeth Taylor's affair with Richard Burton.
An HBO documentary, "Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes," is now available, featuring an Oscar-winning actress who married eight men. The film includes candid interviews from a recently discovered series, detailing her life and loves.
In the documentary, Taylor revealed that her romantic relationship with "Cleopatra" co-star Richard Burton resulted in a harsh condemnation from the Vatican.
"The Vatican newspaper published an article claiming that I was a despicable woman and my own children should be taken away from me," Taylor said. "It's an attack that really made me sick," she added.
While married to Eddie Fisher, Taylor became romantically involved with Burton, who was also married at the time. Their affair was exposed by the media in 1962, following Fisher's separation from Debbie Reynolds to marry Taylor.
"[It’s] an attack that really — well, it made me vomit." — Elizabeth Taylor
"Taylor confessed to journalist Richard Meryman that her father referred to her as a prostitute, and she faced opposition from everyone."
In an open letter published in Vatican City's weekly newspaper, Taylor was accused of "erotic vagrancy" for having an affair with Burton while still married to Fisher. The Vatican condemned this act as a "disgrace to the dignity of the hearth," according to Town & Country.
In "Furious Love," Congresswoman Iris Faircloth Blitch advocated for Congress to declare "Miss Taylor and Mr. Burton" inadmissible to reenter the United States due to their unsuitability. This proposal was supported by congressmen in New York and North Carolina, who attributed the country's "moral decline" to the affair.
"Five days of filming were spent by the Italian FBI at the studio as they tried to blow up Taylor with a bomb," the film recalled. "It was a truly horrendous week."
Taylor and Burton were determined to stay together.
In 1963, Burton and Williams ended their partnership, while Taylor and Fisher ended their relationship in the same year, which was also the year Taylor married Burton.
Taylor admitted to feeling guilty about leaving Fisher for Burton when Meryman asked her about it, saying, "Yes, we both feel guilty for causing so much pain."
Meryman inquired if Taylor was concerned about "divine retribution" for her actions. Taylor queried Meryman if he meant being "punished in hell."
""We should pay our penance now," she said."

Still, Taylor had no regrets.
"Loving him was something I couldn't help," Taylor confessed. "It was a certainty."
Burton was married five times from 1964 to 1976, with his first and second marriages lasting from 1964 to 1974, and his third and fourth marriages starting in 1975.
Despite being rejected by Taylor, Fisher became the subject of jokes from comedians. He started using drugs to cope with his performances, which led to a decline in bookings. Later, he admitted to spending $20 million during his peak, most of which he lost on gambling and drugs.
Despite his efforts, Fisher's comeback tour was unsuccessful as his old fans were disillusioned by the scandals and the younger generation had already embraced rock music.
In his autobiography "Been There, Done That," published in 1999, Fisher described Reynolds as "self-centered, totally driven, insecure, untruthful, and phony." He claimed that he left his career during the Taylor marriage because he was too busy taking her to emergency rooms, cleaning up after her pets, children, and servants. Both ex-wives were furious, and his daughter, Carrie Fisher, threatened to change her name to Reynolds.
Fisher died in 2010 at age 82.
This year, "Erotic Vagrancy" by Roger Lewis was published, detailing the passionate relationship between Taylor and Burton that led to four marriages and divorces.
"According to Lewis, the group was immersed in their world of desire. They would frequently escape for weekend getaways filled with impure activities."
""Taylor would have an overdose whenever Burton thought, 'I’ve got to get back to Sybil, this is getting ridiculous,' and Eddie Fisher was trying to control her, which she hated. She didn't want anyone telling her what she could or couldn't do. It was just chaos," Lewis alleged."
Taylor gave Burton "the terrors," as documented in Lewis's diaries, and the couple fought hard for their love.
"According to Lewis, their fights were physical and involved bashing each other. He believes they got bored and would poke at each other, with a sense of competitiveness. However, all their fighting would eventually lead to sexual activity, which would re-energize them. This behavior continued for years, with their servants and retainers witnessing their extreme relationship."
Their divorce in 1974, after 10 years of marriage, was due to Taylor's addiction to pills and Burton's alcoholism. Taylor later asked Burton if they had made a mistake, and they remarried the following year, only to call it quits less than 12 months later.
Taylor once stated that she remained madly in love with him until the day he died, as Lewis said the pair remained the loves of each other's lives.
Burton died suddenly from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1984. He was 58.
"Elizabeth Taylor did not attend Richard Burton's funeral due to concerns about publicity and inappropriateness, but later visited his grave alone to pray, stating that it was the only time they were ever alone together."
According to the author, Elizabeth Taylor's romantic friendship with Colin Farrell reminded her of her great love.
Taylor preserved Burton's final letter, penned to her three days prior to his demise, in her nightstand until her passing in 2011 at the age of 79.
"Lewis stated that he believed there was absolute devotion in their relationship, which went beyond a big love affair. They were undoubtedly the loves of each other's lives. Even in photos, their gazes consumed each other. Their love was intense and dangerous, but there's no doubt that it existed. It remained constant throughout."
