Eddie Van Halen convinced Sammy Hagar to come out of retirement.
In 1985, the Red Rocker left his successful solo career and joined Van Halen, having previously performed with the band Montrose.
Sammy Hagar and Van Halen almost never were.
After receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Hagar was about to slow down his music career until Eddie Van Halen contacted him.
"When I was ready to retire, Van Halen appeared. Although I dislike using the word, I felt it was necessary to say, 'I'm going to quit for a while. I'm going to stop. I've been touring my whole life,'" the rocker admitted.
"In 1985, after achieving platinum albums in a row and being rich and famous, I questioned the purpose of continuing my music career. However, a call from Eddie Van Halen changed my perspective and marked a defining moment in my life."
In the 1970s, Hagar gained fame as a member of Montrose before becoming Van Halen's frontman and later achieving success as a solo artist.
In 1996, Eddie and I had creative differences, which led to my departure from Van Halen. However, I took it in stride and returned to work with renewed determination.
Early in his career, joining Montrose was crucial for him.
Sammy Hagar had planned to retire before Eddie Van Halen invited him to join the band.
"Going from playing clubs and someone else's music to writing my own music, creating an album of original material, and touring the world was a significant step for me," he shared with Planet Chronicle Digital. "That was a defining moment in my career. I learned everything from Ronnie Montrose, including how to perform on stage, write songs, and do it all."
Eddie Van Halen rejoined the group from 2003 to 2005 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member in 2007. He passed away in 2020.
On Tuesday, Hagar was accompanied by famous individuals such as Michael Anthony of Van Halen, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Mayer, and Guy Fieri of Food Network.
Fieri admitted to Planet Chronicle Digital that he was "overwhelmed" when Hagar asked him to speak at the ceremony, stating that he was "more nervous" to emcee the event "than I was for my own star."
Sammy Hagar's Walk of Fame ceremony made Guy Fieri more nervous than his own.
"Without question, it was one of the highlights of my career. Sammy's ceremony was amazing and so deserved. He's a great guy who's way beyond the music. He's a philanthropist, a community guy, and a worldly person. He's a true inspiration."
During his speech at the ceremony, Mayer discussed his relationship with Hagar.
Van Halen asked Sammy Hagar to join their band even though he was already a successful artist on his own.
Sammy didn't need to join another band to continue making hit records. He likely took the offer because it sounded fun. Sammy is motivated by having fun and enjoys the kind of fun we only dream about.
"Every time I think of him, a thought comes to mind that I’d like to share with you today: No matter where you are or what you’re doing, Sammy Hagar is having way more fun than you."
