Ed O'Neill, star of 'Married... with Children,' confesses to his role in the feud with his co-star.
The actor who starred in PBS' 'Finding Your Roots' expressed regret over not reacting differently when Amanda Bearse did not invite him to her wedding.
Ed O'Neill, a "Married... with Children" alum, shared his favorite memories and regrets from his time on the hit sitcom.
For 11 seasons from 1987 to 1997, the 77-year-old actor portrayed Al Bundy on the raunchy and sometimes controversial show, alongside a cast that included Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate, David Faustino, David Garrison, Amanda Bearse, and Ted McGinley.
In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, O'Neill, who was featured in the PBS documentary series "Finding Your Roots," expressed his thoughts on what he missed most about "Married... with Children."
He said, "Rehearsing it brought us lots of laughter."
Michael Moye and Ron Leavitt, the creators of 'Modern Family,' were comedic geniuses who were quite unusual. They weren't typical comedy writers.
"O'Neill remarked that the people they met were quite unique and captivating. Although he didn't catch the entire cast, he still maintains contact with Christina, David, and Katey. However, he hasn't been in touch with Amanda or David Garrison as much since they're no longer around."
"Dave is in New York while Amanda is in Atlanta, or Georgia, for the most part, and I missed the show."
Since the success of "Married... with Children," O'Neill was grateful for the career opportunities that came his way, including his star-making turn as Al Bundy.
"I'm grateful for that show," O'Neill remarked. "Without it, everything else seems incomplete, like a chain."
"Luck is a lot of luck," he said. "You have to put yourself in the way of it and hope for the best."
"I've been extremely lucky," the Ohio native added.
In his interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, O'Neill discussed his contentious relationship with Bearse on the set of "Married... with Children."
O'Neill revealed on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast "Dinner's On Me" that their falling out was due to a dispute over a TV Guide cover.
The July-August 1989 cover of the magazine featured O'Neill, Sagal, Applegate, and Faustino, while Bearse and Garrison, who played supporting characters, were not included.
Ferguson was informed by O'Neill that Bearse and Garrison were not allowed to be on the cover.
He stated that TV Guide had a rule limiting the number of shows that could be featured on the cover. However, he noted that the company had recently broken this rule by featuring "M*A*S*H" and "Dallas" on the cover.
"Married... with Children" was not created for us, and we were fortunate to receive the TV Guide cover. It was a significant achievement, and Amanda and David appeared together on the cover. We were on the soundstage when she said, "Go tell Ron Leavitt this doesn't work. We're all on the cover."
O'Neill suggested that if he had been diplomatic, he should have said, "I'll talk to him about it."
He remembered thinking, "But instead, I said, ‘No. I’m not doing that. I'm sorry you guys aren't on the cover. I really am! I wish you were! But we can't do anything about it. What do you want me to do, lie to you, and tell you that you know, I'm going to go to bat for you? I'm not,'"
Ferguson was informed by O'Neill that he regrets not doing things differently, and he would have done them differently in hindsight.
Ed O'Neill, star of 'Married...with Children,' discusses what he misses about filming the sitcom.
During an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, O'Neill clarified his previous statement, stating that he had been "misinterpreted."
"He admitted that the TV Guide thing happened and he was not sorry for his decision."
He continued, "If I were smarter, I would have said to them, 'Look, let me go to Ron and talk to him, OK?' I should have done that. But instead of that, I said, 'Hey, no. This isn't for us, the actors. This is for the whole show. This is for the grips and the makeup and the hair and the guy that drags the cable.'"
""By playing lesser roles and not caring about being on the cover, I would have had more fun and not had to work that day taking pictures," O'Neill explained."
O'Neill said that their relationship deteriorated after Bearse didn't invite him to her wedding in 2010, which he felt was a mistake.
Amanda's wedding was a new experience at the time. He didn't receive an invitation and felt hurt. When he asked about it, she said it was a difficult decision. He thought she was confusing him with Al Bundy.
""I didn't say that, but that's how I felt," O'Neill remembered. "Why did you say that? Do you think I'm a Neanderthal or something?" This made him angry."
O'Neill admitted that he regretted his reaction to the snub and wished he had handled it better in hindsight.
"If I could redo that situation, I would have told Amanda, "It's your wedding, and you have the right to choose who's there. Best wishes to you." However, I made a mistake and said something hurtful. I regret that and wish I could go back and handle it better."
In a 2013 interview with Television Academy, O'Neill stated that he and Faustino were the only "Married… with Children" cast members who were not invited to Bearse's wedding.
Bearse had informed him that excluding them from the guest list was a difficult decision, but she believed they would be amused and find it entertaining when she and Schenken made their entrance in tuxedos during the wedding ceremony.
He recalled saying, "Amanda, what is funny about two women in tuxedos walking down to church?"
"She exclaimed, "See!" after I started laughing, and I responded, "Well, you know why? Because it's f------ funny, and I'm not going to be the only one who doesn't think so." Although I found her little white tux amusing, she may not have been entirely wrong in excluding me."
In his interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, O'Neill admitted that he had not truly reconnected with Bearse since their last encounter.
"He remembered saying goodbye to her when they finished, but he added, "Listen, we had a great relationship for the first few years. And then she took over directing the shows, starting with our own.""
He continued, "The cast came together and said, 'Let's make it a great experience for her. Let's work hard so that she succeeds. We had that kind of thing. Whatever happened, all I can point to is the TV Guide thing, which they were upset about, and I understand their frustration."
"However, the TV Guide did not make an exception for any other shows besides 'M*A*S*H' and 'Dallas.' This was unfortunate, but it happened. Amanda was great on the show, and I loved working with her. We were hilarious together on the show, as were David and I. When David left the show, I took him out to lunch and pleaded with him not to go. It's just show business."

In a recent episode of PBS's "Finding Your Roots," O'Neill and former Van Halen rocker Sammy Hagar were featured, as they discovered the hidden secrets of their ancestries.
In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, O'Neill discussed the significance of his involvement in the series and exploring his ancestry.
"I really enjoyed the show and Sammy Hagar's story. I love the show and Sammy Hagar, but I don't know him personally."
Since childhood, O'Neill had been curious about his own family roots.
"He said, "I lived in an Irish community because we were insular. They arrived in the 1850s, and it was a neighborhood where everyone was Irish. My relatives would often talk about the old country, banshees sitting on roofs before someone died, and other such things.""
"I recall being around four years old when I would inquire, 'What is a banshee and what do you mean by "old country"?', as O'Neill recounted. Alternatively, I was intrigued because my aunt had an Irish accent and I would ask, 'Why does she speak with a foreign accent?'"
He added, "I've been religiously watching this show for three or four years now, and I saw many stories where people being interviewed would say, 'I didn't know my family was in Auschwitz.' It was like a shock. So, when I did this show, I asked Henry, 'Why isn't there more on the O'Neills?'"
Ed O'Neill discusses the significance of discovering his ancestry on 'Finding Your Roots'.
Gates informed O'Neill that many of his ancestors had died during the Great Famine, a period of famine and illness that afflicted Ireland from 1845 to 1852.
"O'Neill stated that he was always curious and finally learned that all the records were lost. He said, "He said, 'A lot of them didn't make it from the west of Ireland.' And I said, ‘What do you mean, the famine?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, the famine. A million people starved to death.’ That's a lot of people on a little island.""
