Divorced Baby Boomers Seek Romance: A Risky Bet
New Netflix reality show explores the challenges of finding love among disabled veterans, faithful widows, and boomers.
Six "Silver Singles" are looking for another chance at romance, stepping aside from the "Golden Bachelor."
"The Later Daters," Netflix's new reality show, offers baby boomers a chance to re-enter the dating scene following difficult relationship experiences, such as divorce or widowhood. The participants' ages varied from around 50 to 70 years old.
These "Silver Singles" found deeper connections with the help of their adult children and closest friends, as they continued their quest to find their partner for life.
In the docuseries, a Harvard-trained behavioral scientist and author of "How to Not Die Alone," Logan Ury, coached the cast and demonstrated that it's always possible to find love, even at a later stage in life.
Several "Later Daters" shared their experiences of dating in a different era, expressing frustration with the complex dating apps.
These heartwarming and emotional individuals, including disabled veterans and faithful widows, explained why they "deserve" a "second, third or fourth" chance at love.
A 63-year-old boomer was identified as the "Golden Bachelorette" after being widowed.
One of the Netflix cast members revealed that she "related" to the popular dating show.
Suzanne, a 71-year-old optometrist from Georgia, shared with Planet Chronicle Digital that she saw similarities between the first "Golden Bachelorette," Joan Vassos.
Suzanne stated that she found "The Golden Bachelorette" interesting, despite never having watched any of the "Bachelor" series before, because she thinks the lead is special.
"The show had numerous widows, many of whom had been grieving for six years. This resonated with me deeply, which is why I strongly connected with the first "Golden Bachelorette.""
"The parallel nature of everything was impressive. I believe it provides hope for people, especially at our age, that they deserve multiple loves. It's reassuring to know that love is out there for everyone, regardless of age."
Six years ago, Suzanne's husband passed away from cancer. Despite his passing, she received his "blessings" and decided to give love another chance.
"Partnerships are essential in life, and my journey is not yet over. Finding someone to share the final chapter with is crucial, but it requires preparation."
"Life is for partnerships, and . . . my life's not over." — Suzanne, 71
Suzanne stated that she seeks a "hot stallion" as a partner.
"Well, aren't we all looking for a silver fox? That's the question," she chuckled. "Certainly I've always loved a dark-haired man . . . but now I'm into silver foxes . . . I'm looking for a man who loves wine, speaks a little Italian, is vivacious, full of energy, and has a positive outlook on life."
Some daters, including Nate, 56, have acknowledged their flaws when trying to find love.
Nate, a member of the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division, sustained severe injuries when he jumped out of a plane. While many soldiers landed in "trees and ponds," Nate landed "directly" on his back, fracturing his back and tearing up his knee. His injuries required multiple knee and back surgeries, ultimately leading him to end his army career.
He revealed to Planet Chronicle Digital that his disability has hindered him from dating, stating that he faces challenges in dating outgoing women due to his physical limitations, which prevent him from participating in activities like hiking.
"Although there are limitations, I used to meet many women in my age group, aged 45 to 55, who were active in yoga, running, and wanted to go hiking and camping. However, those activities are no longer something I can or want to do."
Nate, a 56-year-old member of the 'Later Daters' cast, claims that being a disabled veteran is a 'flaw' in his romantic relationships.
Nate admitted that he faced mental challenges in part due to physical factors, which limited him in the dating world.
"I wonder if they believe I can still be a protector, despite my bad knee and back, as I haven't had any issues before. However, I think it's something I've had to handle on my own and simply say, "You are good enough," and someone will understand. If they truly care about me."
Pam, 71, who is one of the oldest daters, admitted that she devoted much of her life to being a member of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, which negatively impacted her past relationships because of frequent travel.
"I flew all around the world and was in the Civil Reserve, which meant I was gone 21 days a month. I was in Dubai one day and then we were in the Philippines the next. We did rescue missions," she told Planet Chronicle Digital.
"We didn't date because we were there long enough to haul people on the plane and get out, as it was mostly disasters like Mount Pinatubo, which erupted and caused earthquakes."
Pam, a 71-year-old member of the "Later Daters" cast, reveals the worst date she's ever been on.
Pam stated that she had made an effort to remain unattached to individuals.
"My lifestyle, which I preferred, made dating difficult because I couldn't return to the Philippines to see them again, as they were mostly military people."
The 71-year-old revealed that she was previously married to Steve Marriot, an English musician who co-founded the rock bands Small Faces and Humble Pie. Marriott was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of Small Faces.
Toby Marriott was raised by Pam, who stated that she was Steve's son. Steve tragically passed away in 1991 due to a fire believed to have been caused by a cigarette.
In the trailer for "The Later Daters," Pam joked, "I've been married twice - my first husband fell asleep with a cigarette and burned down the house, and my second husband is also deceased. Now, do you want to go out with me?"
Her second husband passed away after losing his fight against liver cancer, as she shared with Planet Chronicle Digital.
Pam additionally recalled one of the worst dates she’s been on.
Anise, a 62-year-old member of the 'Later Daters' cast, reveals her past traumatic romantic experiences.
My girlfriend convinced me to join Match.com, but I found out they exaggerated a bit. I had a coffee date with a man, but he turned out to be an older gentleman with a walker. He told me the picture was from 30 years ago, and he didn't even treat me to coffee. She chuckled.
Despite her tumultuous dating journey, Pam seemed joyful and offered advice to those seeking love during these "golden" ages.
"At my age, my father always emphasized that there are only two things in life: dead or alive. While you're alive, you must live. Therefore, avoid sitting on the couch and staring at the TV. Instead, get up and live your life by meeting new people and increasing your chances of living longer and happily."
"The Later Daters" is available to stream on Netflix.
