Despite side effects, Terry Dubrow, a 'botched' doctor, wants to stop Ozempic 'shaming'.
A plastic surgeon confessed to using Zepbound, a similar drug.
Terry Dubrow, a botched doctor, aims to reduce the stigma surrounding weight loss drugs like Ozempic.
From the start, I believed this was the greatest medical advancement in history, as I stated on Planet Chronicle Digital, said Dubrow.
The treatment is effectively addressing the leading cause of all four leading causes of death in this country, including heart and cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and diabetes.
"By targeting the primary risk factor for death and doing it safely and effectively, we can share this information with the community in our nation. This approach is particularly beneficial for those who are interested in improving their health and wellness, even if they don't have as much weight to lose."
Dubrow also wants to put an end to the stigmatization of Ozempic and other weight-loss medications.
"He urged caution against shaming Ozempic, suggesting that it should be treated like any other drug and used appropriately under a physician's guidance and supervision. He also advised learning how to use it properly."
Jillian Michaels, a vocal critic of Ozempic, responded to comments from the "Botched" star, who has been a proponent of the drug. As she told Planet Chronicle Digital earlier this month, "If it was the easy way out, I would recommend it."
The conversation between Dubrow and Michaels started on Jan. 24 when TMZ asked Dubrow about Michaels' recent interview comments regarding the negative effects of Ozempic.
"As a board-certified physician and a certified expert for the California medical board, I am not interested in debating scientific and medical issues with a personal trainer. My concern is that someone of great influence like [Michaels] may discourage people from seeking treatment for obesity with these new weight loss drugs."
The New York Post published an interview with Dubrow in July 2023, where he discussed the side effects of weight loss drugs and their potential dangers, including patients being hospitalized with pancreatitis due to Ozempic use. Michaels later appeared on the outlet and read from the interview, calling it a "strange about face" from Dubrow.
Dubrow stated that an article about an interview she had was taken out of context. She had been interviewed about Ozempic shaming and how, for a while, people were using it without discussing it. However, she believes that this has changed recently, with Oprah discussing her own experience with it.
"The process of undergoing Ozempic and related drugs like Mounjaro and Zepbound and Wegovy is similar to a new plastic surgery procedure. It involves having the procedure done, but individuals may not feel comfortable admitting to having it done. However, it is crucial to recognize that these drugs can have significant side effects if used without proper medical supervision. Therefore, it is essential to share our experiences and learn as a community how to use these drugs safely."
Dubrow stated that some of his patients who were hospitalized with pancreatitis had significant side effects due to not getting the medication prescribed under doctor supervision and consuming too much alcohol. He emphasized the importance of opening up the dialogue to prevent such incidents from happening again.
He stated that his statement during the interview was not that Ozempic and its related drugs are bad.
Dubrow confessed that he recently experimented with a newer form of Mounjaro, one of the many medications akin to Ozempic.
"He said, "I wanted to try Zepbound, the new version of Mounjaro, which is FDA approved for weight loss, particularly in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami. I had gained about 18 pounds while traveling in Europe and thought it would be interesting to see how this product affects me.""
Dubrow explains that Mounjaro differs from Ozempic in that it employs both semaglutide and a hormone called GIP, resulting in faster weight loss with fewer side effects.
Dubrow stated that he began with a low dose and immediately observed a change in his appetite, as if it were an instant appetite suppressant.
He observed a decrease in hunger and cravings, although it was accompanied by mild nausea, a typical side effect.
"By the third and fourth weeks, after injecting it into myself, I experienced mild but persistent nausea for a day or two, followed by a complete change in my appetite. I felt in control and had no desire for alcohol or desserts. It was empowering. I felt great and lost almost all the weight I gained on the trip within four weeks. I was impressed and enjoyed the experience."
Despite the debate over the side effects, the "Real Housewives of Orange County" star felt confident while trying the medication.
Dubrow stated that these drugs have been available since 2017 and have been studied for a decade. As a result, they are not a new drug on the market, and millions of patients have already taken them. The drug has been extensively researched and published in peer-reviewed journals for its use in diabetics, making it safe for diabetics. Recently, the drug has been studied in non-diabetics for weight loss purposes.
"The drug, like any other medication, had a list of side effects associated with it, such as nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramping. However, the side effect profile was similar to that of any other drug, including aspirin. Given its long history of use and FDA approval, I decided to try it out."
Dubrow mentioned that he talks about both medication and lifestyle changes for his patients.
I advise those who struggle with weight loss or are yo-yo dieters to consider it, in addition to diet and exercise.
"If diet and exercise were highly effective for weight loss, there wouldn't be an obesity epidemic. However, this represents a significant medical breakthrough, and it's fascinating to understand how it works and how effective it is."
