Derek Hough, a 'Dancing with the Stars' judge, describes his wife's survival after a nearly fatal brain surgery as a "miracle."
In December 2023, Derek Hough's wife, Hayley Erbert, underwent skull implant surgery following a "life-threatening" emergency.
Derek Hough and his wife Hayley Erbert have returned to the dance floor after a tumultuous year.
Nearly a year after Erbert underwent emergency brain surgery, the dancing duo performed an emotional dance during the "Dedication" themed night.
Hough stated on the "Dancing with the Stars" red carpet that the past year has been filled with only highs and lows.
Hough stated, "Being here tonight in this ballroom was truly special, as we never thought it would be possible to return to this room again after our journey. It was an incredible journey."
Derek Hough, wife Hayley Erbert, shares details of her near-fatal brain surgery.
In December, a "Dancing with the Stars" professional dancer named Erbert became disoriented following a performance and needed to be hospitalized. After being diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel, Erbert underwent an emergency craniectomy.
A hematoma is a buildup of blood in the skull, typically resulting from a burst blood vessel in the brain, as stated by the Mayo Clinic.
Hough stated that the doctors informed her that her daughter might not survive, but later they assured her that she would not be the same person. As a result, she was told that she had lost her daughter, which was unbearably heartbreaking.
"Being here, dancing with her, is truly a miracle."
"The doctors told me that… she might not make it… Then to flash forward, to be here, to be dancing with her… it really, really is a miracle, truly." — Derek Hough
Last year, Erbert's health updates were frequently shared on social media by Hough and his professional dancer sister Julianne.
At the time of her Instagram post, Hough disclosed that the surgery was done to replace a significant portion of her skull that was taken out during her craniectomy.
Erbert shared her journey to recovery with Planet Chronicle Digital following her surgery.
"The initial part of my recovery was the toughest because I was told that I might not survive and might not be able to walk or dance ever again," she explained.
"Since I was three years old, dance has always been a significant part of my life. Therefore, hearing that it would be taken away from me is the most devastating thing because it's a piece of me that's being ripped out."
The former "Dancing with the Stars" performer expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to dance once more and described the experience as "unique."
Benson Boone's "Beautiful Things (Acoustic)" was the soundtrack for a sentimental ballroom routine performed by Hough and Erbert.
In August 2023, the married couple began their "Symphony of Dance" tour.
In 2015, the couple started dating after meeting on "Dancing with the Stars." Hough proposed to his partner in Yosemite National Park, California, in 2022.

Mark Ballas, a "Dancing with the Stars" alum and guest judge, revealed to Planet Chronicle Digital that he was among the first people Hough contacted when his wife underwent surgery.
