Danny Masterson files an appeal against his rape conviction.
In September 2023, 'That '70s Show' actor Danny Masterson was given a sentence of 30 years to life in prison.
According to Planet Chronicle Digital, Danny Masterson's legal team filed an appeal to his 2023 rape conviction on Wednesday.
The trial was compromised due to numerous procedural and substantive errors, and the defense requested that convictions be overturned, according to the documents.
Last year, the actor from "That 70s Show" was given a 30-year to life sentence, which is the maximum allowed by law, and will become eligible for parole after serving more than 25 years.
Cliff Gardner, Masterson's lawyer, stated that the Appellant's Opening Brief submitted on December 18, 2024, revealed two significant issues with Danny Masterson's convictions: (1) the trial contained numerous judicial errors that biased the jury's perception of the evidence against him and (2) there was a substantial amount of exculpatory evidence that was not presented to the jury.
"Danny's habeas lawyer will be submitting a Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus to document additional defects in the trial process, in addition to the appeal, as part of Danny's challenge to his convictions."
Masterson was initially incarcerated at a medium-security prison in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He was later transferred to the California Men's Colony (CMC) on Feb. 16, following his time at California State Prison, Corcoran – a maximum-security facility that once housed cult leader Charles Manson.
The Ranch" actor was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for two counts of forcible rape and initially transferred from the Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles to North Kern State Prison.
In May 2023, Masterson was convicted of two counts of forcible rape, but a jury was unable to reach a verdict on a third charge after eight days of deliberation by seven men and five women.
Judge Charlaine Olmedo of the Los Angeles County Superior Court sentenced Tom Masterson to 15 years to life in prison for each count, with the sentences to be served consecutively.
If convicted on three counts of rape by force or fear for sexual assaults that took place between 2001 and 2003 at his Hollywood Hills home, Masterson could have faced up to 45 years in prison.
In June 2020, he was arrested and released on a $3.3 million bond. Despite pleading not guilty to the charges, he has continued to proclaim his innocence.
