Danielle Fishel, known for her role on 'Boy Meets World,' reveals breast cancer diagnosis.
Fishel announces she's having surgery for early-stage breast cancer.
Danielle Fishel has some tough news to share about her health.
On Monday's episode of "Pod Meets World," the actress, 43, disclosed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
"She started by saying, "I want to share something with our listeners. It was Rider and Will who were among the first people I told the news to," before continuing, "I've recently been diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, a type of breast cancer.""
Fishel stated, "I was diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with micro-invasion, but I will be okay. I will undergo surgery to remove it and follow-up treatment. Over the past few days, I have had to make many decisions."
"It would be so much easier with as busy as I am, with the 50 jobs I have and the two kids and the husband and the house, to say, ‘I don’t have time for that. I went to my mammogram last year, I was fine last year, I don't need to go again this year.'" — Danielle Fishel
She revealed that she had always believed that if she ever developed cancer, she would keep her suffering private, only confiding in her closest loved ones and waiting until she had overcome it before going public with her experience. She admitted that this allowed her to present a "pretty picture" of her journey, but she later came to understand that the most valuable lessons are learned at the beginning of a story or in the midst of its messiness.
Danielle Fishel, star of "Boy Meets World," discusses her gratitude for her time on the show.
It was only after speaking to close friends and family members that Fishel realized how many people have been affected by cancer.
"The only reason I caught my cancer early is because I made an appointment after receiving a text message about my yearly mammogram. Despite being busy with 50 jobs, two kids, a husband, and a house, I prioritize going to my doctor's appointments. Last year, I went to my mammogram and was fine, but I still went again this year, even though I could have easily skipped it."
"Instead of saying 'Yeah, it’s time. Got to make that appointment,' I felt like it was time to make the appointment. And they found it so early that I’m going to be fine."
Fishel expressed her desire to share her story with more people "in the hope that it will inspire anyone to seek medical attention. Whether it's for an appointment or to discover a health issue, it's important to take action when possible."
She repeated that she would be "fine" but admitted that she had "big decisions" to make about her treatment.
"She stated that she hasn't made all the decisions yet because she still needs to meet with various doctors, including oncologists, radiation specialists, and hormone therapists."
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from Fishel when requested a comment.
Eric and Shawn, who played the characters of Eric and Shawn on "Boy Meets World," along with Topanga, voiced their support for her. She informed her listeners that their podcast schedule may change due to her treatment, but they assured her that she need not worry about it as it was "the last thing" on their minds.
In addition to breast exams, it is recommended to stay informed about prostate exams and colonoscopies.
She was informed by Friedle that there might be challenging days ahead, but they would be there to support her.
