Through his music, Walker Hayes aims to motivate individuals battling addiction.

In October, the 44-year-old singer-songwriter, who had struggled with alcohol addiction for years, marked his eighth year of sobriety. Recently, Hayes released an EP titled "Sober Thoughts," which chronicled his journey to recovery.

Hayes frequently shares his personal experiences with overcoming alcoholism on Planet Chronicle Digital to maintain his sobriety and inspire others struggling with substance abuse problems.

"My mission is to help anyone feeling lonely and overwhelmed by the idea of recovery," he stated.

At one point in my life, I believed that I would never recover from this and that it would forever be a part of my life.

"He stated that he writes about recovery once a week and that there is always one song out of five that relates to his story or someone else's."

Hayes, a Grammy Award nominee, pointed out that the country music scene can sometimes be linked to promoting a drinking culture. However, he wants his fans to recognize that there is an alternative choice.

He stated that he is in an industry that often tolerates a lifestyle centered around drinking. He clarified that he is not trying to fight against or eliminate this lifestyle, but rather to demonstrate to people, including himself, that there are alternatives available.

"And we can address our problem when it arises," Hayes said. "And, honestly, our weakness can be our strength, you know? That's OK."

Hayes has also formed brand partnerships with companies that share his goal, in addition to promoting his message through music, as he told Planet Chronicle Digital.

Hayes worked with Athletic Brewing Company, the largest nonalcoholic brewery in the US, to launch a new American pale ale inspired by his hit song "Fancy Like" last month.

"He informed Planet Chronicle Digital that they had dropped a nonalcoholic beer that provides the same experience as regular beer without the negative consequences of alcohol."

Hayes realized that he had often shifted the blame for his problems onto others while reflecting on his journey to overcome struggles such as addiction, poverty, and loss.

He stated that his greatest adversary throughout the journey was unfortunately himself, but he excelled in accusing others, including the coach, boss, parents, and circumstances.

"I realized that I had a mustache, beard, and backwards hat when I looked in the mirror and said, 'Hey, there's a common denominator here.'"

In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, the musician discussed the advice he would give his younger self after overcoming hardships in his life.

Hayes said, "You might need to surrender, man. You don't have to bark so hard."

He continued, "I know that my overcorrection was due to some things from my upbringing. However, I would advise my younger self to relax a bit and focus on the things that the world sees me trying to achieve now."

"I'm not a perfect husband, believer, or dad, but I hope people see me as someone who is trying and feeling inspired to try. Let's just give it a shot."

In 2016, Hayes decided to quit drinking after struggling with alcohol addiction since childhood.

One day while working at Costco from 4-11, I was also writing and performing shows. It was exhausting, and I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed.

"Hayes stated, "On a Saturday, I awoke with the sensation that I would soon die. I felt physically as though I could not endure another day. Consequently, I ceased. Initially, one day turned into two, then two days became a week, and finally, a week evolved into a month.""

In 2018, the loss of their baby daughter Oakleigh, who died shortly after birth due to a uterine rupture, almost claimed Laney's life and shook Hayes' commitment to his sobriety.

While speaking with Planet Chronicle Digital, Hayes revealed that he left Laney at home and drove to a bar after the couple buried Oakleigh.

"He said, "I just wanted to get in a fight. I didn't care about the outcome, I just wanted to get drunk and fight someone I couldn't beat up. I wanted them to destroy me, but I wanted to make some damage. I don't know why, but I ended up at a bar. Unfortunately, my wallet was missing from my car, so I had to drive back home.""

After returning home, Laney directed Hayes to a local Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

"He recounted his experience at an AA meeting, where the first person to speak shared their story and began with "I was angry." The speaker was captivated and felt a sense of connection with the speaker. Despite not meeting anyone or saying anything, the AA meeting had a profound impact on his life that night."

Hayes thanked his family for supporting him during his struggles with sobriety and his career's highs and lows. The singer married Laney, his high school sweetheart, in 2004. The couple have daughters Lela, 18, Loxley, 10, and Everly, 7, and sons Chapel, 16, Baylor, 14, and Beckett, 12.

In 2021, Hayes' career took off after a TikTok video of him and Lela dancing to his song "Fancy Like" became a hit.

Hayes achieved a new level of fame after scoring a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Country chart with "Fancy Like," which also reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the song's success.

Hayes and his children's popular social media videos have resulted in brand partnerships, such as a commercial for Applebee's and a back-to-school campaign with Great Clips. Additionally, JCPenney has utilized the singer's social media presence to launch a limited clothing collection that was recently released.

In his interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Hayes admitted that he had initially doubted whether he was the suitable individual to launch a clothing line.

"When they called me, I wasn't sure if I was confident enough to make fashion decisions," he said.

As they included me and dove into my personal story, they gave me more and more confidence, allowing me to really help create this line.

Many of these items are personal and hold significance because we created them together. One such item is a jacket that belonged to my father, which I wear daily. Although he is no longer with us, his jacket will now be passed down to others, becoming a cherished part of their lives.

"He stated that he feels confident wearing T-shirts with textures and colors that represent his personality and style. He added that these T-shirts are a significant part of his life and identity. He expressed gratitude to JCPenney for trusting him and providing him with a successful line of clothing."

Hayes remembered that he never made his own clothing choices in the past. He said his mother would select clothes for him and his brother, and JCPenney was one of their preferred stores. Since marrying Laney, Hayes has relied on her to pick out his clothes.

He remarked, "That's a brilliant approach to launch a men's collection - by featuring a genuine guy who likely buys and wears typical JCPenney clothing. As luck would have it, I have a cool job that aligns with it."

"Our relationship has been magical, organic, and something I would love to continue in a heartbeat. It's been a blast, and I can't wait to see it flourish out in the world."

The JCPenney collection featuring Walker Hayes is now available online and in select stores.
