Co-star hookups, first kisses, and fake weddings: 'Brady Bunch' actors reveal all.
The original 'Brady Bunch' house is being offered as a staycation destination through a sweepstakes featuring Williams and Knight.
Barry Williams and Christopher Knight, both stars of "The Brady Bunch," are reflecting on the past after celebrating the show's 55th anniversary.
But Williams wants to clarify one piece of history.
The 70-year-old admitted in a recent interview with Us Weekly that they all had hookups with each other at some point, not necessarily during filming.
"Williams told Planet Chronicle Digital that the statement was not accurate, explaining, "I made that statement 14 years ago...you know how these things cycle around.""
He explained that we grew up together and are the people we know and trust. We spent more time together as a "Brady" family than with our own families, and we genuinely like each other, which seems like a natural extension of affection.
"Bobby and Cindy had a fake marriage in Tiger's doghouse, literally. I dated Maureen and we went out, and I was her first kiss. That's what I meant by hooking up."
Knight revealed on the show that he was a late bloomer and very slow in his relationships. He also mentioned that he had been chased by Eve Plumb for a long time.
He remarked, "Looking back, it's somewhat embarrassing."
"How does that relate to hooking up?" questioned Williams.
Knight replied with a laugh, "Ah, I stumbled."
From 1969 to 1974, "The Brady Bunch" aired on ABC for five seasons and has since become a cultural icon, spawning spin-offs, parodies, and a devoted fan base.
The "Brady Bunch" actors were close off-screen, just like their onscreen family.
"We all grew up together. We're the people that we knew, we trusted." — Barry Williams
The show was a warm and inviting environment for Knight, who was 12 when it began. He recalls that it was a struggle to feel validated and heard in his own household. Now, he recognizes the juxtaposition of the show's welcoming atmosphere with the challenges he faced in his own life.
Williams stated, "The authenticity of the pilot was evident because the show centered on getting to know one another and learning about each other. We were literally meeting and learning about each other."
He remembered filming the wedding of Mike and Carol, portrayed by Robert Reed and Florence Henderson, and realizing it was unique in its own right.
He thought, "This could be the start of something memorable," and it felt like they were coming together as a family. They didn't know what the future held, but he remembered feeling that it was special in its own way.
Williams was fond of driving to the Paramount Studios lot, where they filmed the interiors of the Brady home, as well as other shows such as "Star Trek," "Mission: Impossible," "The Odd Couple," and "Bonanza."
'The Brady Bunch' stars share their experiences of being 'foxhole buddies' through their time on the show.
"This place was amazing. There were movies being filmed here, including 'The Godfather'. We would sneak around during filming, watching the sets and getting a glimpse of the action. It felt like we were in a magical land, and it was an exciting place to be."
The Brady house, while its interior was constructed with studio sets, boasted a real exterior built in 1959 by architect Harry M. Londelius Jr. in Studio City, California.
The house has become a popular destination among fans, with numerous photographs being taken of it, making it the second-most photographed home in America after the White House.
The exterior of the home on television did not match the actual interior until 2018 when HGTV bought the house and renovated it on their show, "A Very Brady Renovation."
The house was remodeled to resemble what was shown on TV, with the addition of a second floor to the previously one-story dwelling.
Knight stated that the set was a false environment, and the house was merely an exterior. However, through renovation, they transformed both into a real environment, which Knight believes has never been done before. Knight, Williams, and their onscreen siblings appeared on the renovation show together.
In 2023, Tina Trahan, a lifelong fan, bought the house from HGTV and has been enhancing it to resemble the "Brady Bunch" series.
Planet Chronicle Digital reported that Trahan revealed she added approximately 300 items to the house as Easter surprises for the episodes, and also purchased three vintage vehicles, including the 73 Caprice Classic convertible used by Greg and Marcia for their driving test.
Williams stated that HGTV did an impressive job of replicating the show and set. However, Tina took it to the next level by adding personal touches that were not possible or had limited time for. She also introduced "Easter eggs" for viewers to enjoy.
Knight stated, "The most significant aspect, aside from the Easter eggs, is that she has maintained the house. By purchasing it and remaining loyal to it, she recognizes its significance as a real-life version of a dollhouse that was a part of our lives. No other television show can be compared to this one, where a single picture of every room instantly identifies it. From the family room to the kitchen, living room, boys' room, and girls' room, each room is distinctive and easily recognizable."
Five lucky individuals and their companions will have the chance to fulfill their "Brady Bunch" fantasies through The Brady Experience sweepstakes, which offers a trip to Los Angeles and a stay in the house as rewards.
"To commemorate our 55th anniversary, we decided to have fans in the house and partnered with No Kid Hungry, a charity that fights childhood hunger in America. As a result, winners will get to enjoy a brunch with the "Brady Bunch" cast, featuring pork chops and applesauce."
The Brady Bunch stars reveal how fans can enter the legendary house.
Knight remarked that for years, the exterior of the Brady house was all people could see, but now it has the inside that was shown on television. Unfortunately, no one can see the changes.
"Tina came up with a plan for some audience members to have a chance to implement it in their workplace."
Williams stated that it is a way to continue a positive legacy by allowing individuals to view the inner workings and subsequently contribute to a charitable cause.
The cast of the show shares a special bond that continues to endure even after the show's legacy has been established.
"Knight stated that Barry and the rest of the cast are his oldest friends, and they frequently reunite to stay in touch. He compared their bond to that of foxhole buddies, even though he has no personal experience with war or being in a foxhole. Knight emphasized that their shared experience of being part of a unique group of nine individuals who all have a specific perspective makes their bond unique and different from the rest of the world."
Through their "Real Brady Bros" podcast, Williams and his co-host continue to learn new things about each other.
He stated that it has provided us with a chance to explore our relationship in detail.
Knight observed that despite receiving the same questions for 55 years, the way they are answered, processed, and perceived has evolved over time. As a result, even though the questions remain the same, it is not due to the show's longevity or legacy.
"We constantly cycle back to get back in touch with one another. And it's sort of like being foxhole buddies." — Christopher Knight
Although most of their memories of the show are positive, there are times when they feel irritated with the higher-ups.
Knight remembered that they had to walk an extra 20 minutes to get to the set for the first two years of the show, as they didn't have to pay for parking.
He revealed that he and his younger co-stars, excluding Williams, earned less due to a "10 out of 13 deal" with the showrunners, which resulted in their being written out of three episodes to reduce costs.
"Knight stated that in the second year, each of the five of us was featured in a separate episode, which was written out of an episode. However, they never attempted this again as people took notice. Knight added that it was more challenging for them to exclude us from the show than to simply leave us in."
Knight joked with Williams that he was "too significant" to compose, and Williams likened it to "dodging the draft."
The positive nostalgia for their time on the show is being passed down to the next generation.
Samantha recently visited the Paramount lot with her father, Williams, and saw the areas where he and his castmates spent time, including dressing rooms and the studio school they attended (unfortunately, no original sets from the show are still standing).
A friend recorded the father and daughter taking a tour, and it was a significant moment for Williams to reflect upon.
He said, "I was explaining to her what it was, and I watched [the video] and I was struck by her attentiveness, how much she cared about it. She learned, she listened. And…she seemed to be able to get a part of an experience of my youth when I was not very far from her age, which is 12."
Williams stated that he and his daughter do not frequently discuss the show or regularly view it.
"He said, "I asked her if she's seen the show, and she replied, 'Yeah, I'm familiar with it.' She's also met Chris, which makes it a real person for her. However, I'm not sure how many episodes she's watching. She's a young girl, and I don't want to worry about it. If she picks it up, that's great, and if not, that's okay too.""
