Christian Slater, who played Dexter in 'Original Sin,' admits to being a 'completely different person' in the 90s.
Dexter: Original Sin features Slater as its lead star.
Since his fame in the 1990s, Christian Slater has reflected on how his life has changed.
Despite becoming one of the biggest A-listers of his era after starring in numerous hit movies, the 55-year-old actor struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, which resulted in legal troubles and derailed his acting career.
In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Slater and his co-star in the new show "Dexter: Original Sin," Molly Brown, discussed Slater's transformation from a notorious bad boy to a devoted family man.
In the '90s, I was a very different person, Slater stated.
Today, it's certainly very different as I don't even recognize who that person was.
"Leaving home to go do a job is the hardest thing for me today," Slater stated. "In the 90s, I longed to be anywhere but home. Now, I cherish being at home."
Christian Slater claims he was a "terrifyingly distinct individual" in the 90s.
At the age of 7, Slater began his career and achieved his breakthrough as the villainous high school student Jason "J.D." Dean in the 1988 cult classic "Heathers."
In the following ten years, he solidified his status as a movie star by playing leading roles in successful films such as "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," "True Romance," "Interview with the Vampire," and "Broken Arrow."
As Slater's career took off, his substance abuse problems led to a series of legal problems. In 1989, he was arrested for DUI and given a 10-day jail sentence. In 1994, Slater was arrested again for trying to board a plane with a handgun at JFK airport.

In 1997, Slater was convicted of punching his girlfriend and assaulting a police officer while under the influence of heroin and cocaine. He was sentenced to three months in prison. After his arrest, he spent three months in a rehabilitation facility. He entered rehab again after completing his prison stint.
Slater's legal troubles led to a decline in his acting career, but he successfully overcame his addiction and made a comeback in 2015 with "Bad Robot," earning a Golden Globe.
In a 2015 interview with Details, Slater discussed how he had accepted his past difficulties.
"Slater admitted that he could have spent a considerable amount of time criticizing himself for the decisions he made, given his struggles with alcoholism and addiction, which left him with limited life experience. He emphasized that addiction is not an attractive condition and that it requires a direct confrontation to truly comprehend its nature."
Slater stated that his time in prison was "not so bad" and he believed it was "necessary" at the time.
"I ended up in jail because I didn't prioritize self-care. I realized I needed to take some time for myself, so I did. It was essential for me. When you're on that road, you either destroy yourself or you're forced to take a break."
Slater, after overcoming his addiction issues, shifted his attention to his family. He shares son Jaden and daughter Eliana with ex-wife Ryan Haddon, and he and his wife, Brittany Lopez, have a 4-year-old daughter and a son born in July.
Slater, while speaking with Planet Chronicle Digital, stated that being a father to an infant is "great." He elaborated that although waking up at night to soothe his crying baby son can be "challenging," it is also "so gratifying."
Christian Slater, the star of 'Dexter: Original Sin,' talks about his experience as a father.
"Despite being only five months old, my wife already hears our son calling 'Daddy' at 5:30 in the morning, as Slater joked. "I'm like, 'OK,' but when you go in there, you see him and he's just the best, with his funny smile," he added with a laugh."
"I love it," he added, "It's great."
Michael C. Hall starred in the original "Dexter" series, which ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013, while Slater is set to star in the new "Dexter: Original Sin" series, which premieres on Friday.
In 1991 Miami, Dexter (Patrick Gibson) transforms from a student to a vengeful serial killer. Unable to control his bloodthirsty urges, he must find a way to harness his inner darkness.
"Harry (Slater) guides Dexter in adopting a Code to eliminate people from society without law enforcement's detection, which is challenging for Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department."
In addition to Hall as the narrator, the show features Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, Reno, James Martinez, and a special guest appearance by Sarah Michelle Gellar.
During an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Slater and Brown, who portrayed the younger version of Jennifer Carpenter's "Dexter" character Debra Morgan, recounted how their son was born while they were filming the show.
"Christian's son was born during the shoot, and we were fortunate to work with him, said Brown."
On the day his son was born, he was still working with us in L.A. and appeared in every scene with us.

She chuckled and said, "Obviously, he had a lot on his plate that day."
"Slater remembered it as a big day, and he was charged up and really excited. He felt that it brought everyone closer together. The crew guys would often ask him about his son."
""It was great," he said."
In the TV series, James Remar portrays Harry Morgan, the biological father of Debra and the adopted father of Dexter. Harry is a detective with the Miami-Dade Police Department and a forensics expert who trains Dexter to channel his homicidal urges towards murderers without being caught.
Despite Harry's death before the start of the series, he is seen in flashbacks in the first two seasons and later in Dexter's visions as a voice of reason.
Slater expressed his excitement to Planet Chronicle Digital about portraying Dexter's father and delving deeper into Harry's past.
"James Remar is my favorite actor, and I admire his work in the original show. However, I believe this new version allows us to delve deeper into his character."
He continued, "The original show only gave brief glimpses of him. This opportunity allowed a deeper examination of his background and new discoveries to be made."
"This show answers questions that you didn't know you had."
The first episode of "Dexter: Original Sin" will be shown on Showtime on Dec. 13, with new episodes airing every Friday until Feb. 14.
