Caleb Kennedy, a finalist on 'American Idol,' was given an 8-year prison sentence following a fatal DUI crash.
At 17 years old, the former 'American Idol' contestant was taken into custody.
Caleb Kennedy, who reached the top five on "American Idol" in the 19th season, was given an eight-year prison sentence for a 2022 DUI crash, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
In Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Monday, Kennedy, 20, admitted guilt to a felony charge of driving under the influence that resulted in death.
He was sentenced to 25 years in prison with a $25,100 fine, but the sentence was suspended to eight years with a $15,100 fine. He will serve five years of his sentence with the South Carolina Department of Corrections and three in home detention, with credit being given for the time he's already served since his arrest.
After his release, Kennedy will be put on probation for five years and will have to undergo mental health and substance abuse counseling.
Barry J. Barnette, the solicitor who prosecuted Kennedy, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the case involving vape pens highlights the risks they pose to society. According to Barnette, the use of vape pens led to the death of Larry Parris, a 54-year-old man killed in Kennedy's crash.
Ryan Beasley, Kennedy's defense attorney, stated to Fox Carolina that Caleb deeply regrets the accident and sincerely apologizes to the Parris family. Caleb takes full responsibility for his actions and hopes for a speedy recovery for all those affected by this unfortunate incident.
"Beasley stated to the Greenville News that he had no prior record and was a minor at the time of the incident. He explained that the act was not a typical drunk driving accident and was likely caused by a reaction to his prescription medicine and possibly THC."
According to prosecutors, Kennedy was smoking marijuana with a vape pen prior to the Feb. 8, 2022, accident. However, his defense argued that his Prozac prescription had been increased at the time and that he had a bad reaction to it.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol informed Planet Chronicle Digital that a 2011 Ford pickup was traveling north on West Murph Road when it went onto a private drive and struck a building. As a result, a person inside the building sustained fatal injuries.
In 2021, Kennedy, who was 16 at the time, made it to the finals of "American Idol" before abruptly withdrawing from the competition after a video emerged of him standing near someone wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood.
"Surprise, y'all! I won't be on American Idol anymore. A video of my actions surfaced online and they were not meant to be taken that way. I was young and didn't consider the consequences, but that's no excuse," he wrote on social media.
"I apologize to all my fans and those I have disappointed. Although I will be taking a brief break from social media to improve myself, I understand that this has caused hurt and disappointment, and has led to a loss of respect. I am truly sorry."
The singer concluded by expressing hope that one day he would regain the trust of his fans through prayer.
