Brooke Shields endured 'torment' due to her mother's alcohol addiction.
In 2012, Brooke Shields, the star of 'Blue Lagoon,' lost her mother.
Brooke Shields confessed to experiencing "torment" due to her mother's alcohol addiction.
In her memoir, "Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Get Old," Shields revealed details about her relationship with her mother, Teri Shields, who passed away in October 2012 due to dementia after a prolonged illness.
"In her memoir, Shields wrote that her mother presented herself as non-judgmental but came across that way to her, according to Daily Mail. She always felt like she was in trouble or wrong and waited for the other shoe to drop, which was a result of being raised by an alcoholic."
"My mom's alcoholism caused me constant distress, and I was always anxious and tense," she said. "Even though I knew the industry and public opinion were unpredictable, working on set provided a sense of stability. The space was controlled, and there were rules to follow. This gave me a sense of freedom."
Shields' mother served as her manager from the age of 11 months old. Despite feeling secure on set, Shields was unsure about her mother's behavior at home.
""With my mom at home, I never knew what would happen as plans and moods would change suddenly," the "Mother of the Bride" star confessed."
"Mom's alcoholism was a constant source of agony for me, and I was always a little skittish and on edge." — Brooke Shields
Shields and her husband Chris Henchy desired to parent their children differently when the time arrived.
"To safeguard my children from experiencing feelings of instability, uncertainty, or fear, I established routines and rituals whenever possible, as I detailed in my memoir. Additionally, I encouraged them to be vocal and assertive in sharing their opinions, rather than being reserved."
"Shields stated that nothing was off-limits for discussion, but there would still be consequences for certain actions."
However, her relationship with her late mom was "complicated."
"The model admitted that they relied on her for everything throughout their life, fearing judgment and feeling guilty whenever their behavior fell short of expectations."
"Despite the strong pull to her, she added, 'A magnetic field surrounded her, and even when I knew better, I was always pulled back in. Love is a very powerful motivator.'"
The documentary "Pretty Baby," which premiered in 2023, examined Shields' relationship with her mother and her career.
The movie primarily centered on the disputes that arose during her time as an actress and model in her youth.
Shields faced criticism for her roles in the Calvin Klein jeans campaign, her experience as a child prostitute, and the sex scene she filmed for "Endless Love." In 1981, she lost a lawsuit against photographer Garry Gross, who had photographed her nude at the age of 10 and sold the images later.
