AI could potentially lead to our demise, warns Hugh Grant movie director.
The filmmakers of 'The Heretic' emphasized the significance of stating that the movie is AI-free.
In the final credits of Hugh Grant's new film "Heretic," there is an unexpected announcement regarding artificial intelligence.
There is a message stating that no generative AI was utilized in the creation of this film.
In an interview with the outlet, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the film's directors, expressed their views on technology.
""We are aware that viewers of 'Heretic' may not realize that generative AI was used, but it was crucial for us to make it clear because we believe it's a topic that needs to be discussed." - Woods."
Grant's character is the focus of "Heretic," a film that does not rely heavily on special effects. Instead, it depicts the young Mormon missionaries, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, being trapped in his home for a series of dangerous tests of faith.
Generative AI is an algorithm that randomly combines elements and outputs them as art. However, it is not human and may be considered borderline theft.
The notion that an algorithm can scrape all of human history and art from the internet, repackage it, regurgitate it, and spit it out for someone else to profit from is baffling to me.
"The urgent need for human intersection in art, business, and all aspects of life must be discussed, as the replacement of jobs on Earth is imminent. This will happen rapidly, and it's easy to see how it can occur in the arts, where profit-driven decisions are often made at the expense of the artistic process."
"It’s amazing we could create that technology. Now let’s bury it underground with nuclear warheads, cause it might kill us all." — "Heretic" co-director Bryan Woods
AI was described as "an amazing technology" by Woods.
"Generative AI and video technology are creating amazing things, but it's astonishing that we could create such advanced technology. Let's bury it underground with nuclear warheads to prevent it from causing harm."
Beck, his co-director, informed Variety that they were pleased A24 permitted them to include the note in the credits.
"He stated that the studio is "incredibly artist-friendly" and as far as they're aware, everyone is content with the situation."
Beck stated that they are currently in a period where they feel creatively, they are facing a major ethical conflict, and the competition is already well underway.
"It is crucial to have these conversations before they are forced upon us, as it is extremely dangerous. If we do not intervene, we will be in a perilous situation in five to ten years."
Controversy has been sparked among Hollywood and fans due to the use of generative AI in a few films this year.
The film "Late Night with the Devil" employed AI-generated cutaway graphics for the talk show in the movie, which Colin and Cameron Cairnes, the writers and directors, defended after some viewers threatened to boycott it.
The film's '70s aesthetic was achieved through the combined efforts of our graphics and production design team, who worked diligently to bring our vision to life. We also experimented with AI for three still images, which were further edited and ultimately used as brief interstitials in the film.
"If there’s not people to throttle it, we’re going to find ourselves in five to ten years in a very dangerous situation." — "Heretic" co-director Scott Beck
"We are incredibly fortunate to have had such a talented and passionate cast, crew, and producing team who went above and beyond to bring this film to life. We can't wait for everyone to see it for themselves this weekend."
The film "Civil War," produced by A24, received criticism online from critics for its promotional images that appeared to be generated by AI and shared on social media.
The images portrayed scenes not included in the movie and contained characteristics typical of AI-generated images, such as incorrectly depicting a landmark or displaying a car with three doors on one side. In one photograph, Chicago's Marina Towers were situated on opposite sides of the river.
A24 did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment when the images were initially posted.
