After giving an ultimatum, Cher confesses to having a "really good director" fired.
Cherilyn Sarkisian was born as Cher.
With the release of her memoir, Cher is looking back on her career and addressing rumors about her being "difficult" to work with.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the "Goddess of Pop" revealed that she had clashed with the directors of two film projects in which she had acted.
"Two directors I didn't like are Peter Bogdanovich, whom she worked with on "Mask," and Frank Oz, who was once slated to direct "Mermaids.""
Cher recalled issuing an ultimatum on the set of the 1990 film, which was ultimately directed by Richard Benjamin.
"Cher stated, "Either you're coming or I'm leaving, which is unfortunate because he's an excellent director, but he had a grudge against me." He would respond, "At least my wife adores me!""
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from a representative of Oz when requested a comment.
In 1985, Cher worked with Bogdanovich, who later said that she was the "most difficult actor" he had ever worked with.
"Cher described Bogdanovich as a "real jerk" who was "not nice to the girls in the film" and was "so arrogant." She stated that she "really, really disliked" him."
In 2019, Bogdanovich revealed that his leading lady didn't trust anyone, especially men. He explained that she didn't like men, which was why she had dropped her father's name and formally changed it to Cher in 1979.
Bogdanovich admitted that Cher's disdain for him was likely due to his own disdain for her.
"She always appeared as though someone was cheating her, and I found her demeanor to be depressing when I visited the set one day. I remarked, 'You always seem down and like someone is stealing from you,'" Bogdanovich recalled.
Cher recounted her time on set differently, telling The Sunday Times, "He comes in and asks, 'Cher, where do you think we should film this scene?' I suggest the kitchen, which he agrees to. The next morning he arrives on set, eating an egg sandwich, and starts yelling that he won't let me direct the film; I'm insignificant; he can cut me out at any moment."
"Oh yeah, he was a pig."
Cher stated, "I am really easy to work with. Ask everybody."
"I am not arbitrary in my words because it is right to follow the director's wishes until it is necessary to speak up. Meryl Streep advises that if the director wants you to do something you don't like, you should say "yes, yes, yes" and then do it your way. They won't even notice. I have worked with great directors such as Bob Altman, Mike Nichols, and Norman Jewison, whom I respect. I know when to listen."
"Cher: The Memoir," is out now.
