A million-dollar tequila heist at a border town has led to the discovery of one truck.
Chef Guy Fieri and the former Van Halen singer share ownership of Santo Spirits.
Sammy Hagar and Guy Fieri will be "extremely cautious" from now on, after $1 million worth of product from their tequila brand was stolen as it crossed the border from Mexico to Texas.
Hagar revealed to Planet Chronicle Digital at Metallica's All Within My Hands Foundation presents The Helping Hands Concert & Auction 2024 at L.A.'s YouTube theater that the event was a well-planned heist.
The organization behind the operation was well planned, with the truck drivers being unaware of their involvement. They were hired to pick up the items, but were given fake cellphones and GPS devices to send them to the drop-off location.
"We discovered one truck, which means we're making progress, but we won't be able to locate the second one as it is believed to have been scattered throughout the system."
Last month in Laredo, Texas, two freight trucks carrying $1 million in Santo Spirits tequila were stolen, and Hagar and Fieri are the co-owners of the brand.
The 39-month-old Extra Añejo, along with 24,240 bottles of Santo Blanco and Reposado, was being transported by the missing trucks.
Hagar told Planet Chronicle Digital that Santo, a small brand, caused them to lose their holiday load and had to pay to have it recreated. The situation was "pretty bad stuff," Hagar said.
"Although it affected our finances slightly, Guy Fieri and I don't rely on this for our livelihoods, so it didn't significantly impact our bread and butter."
At the time of the theft, Hagar's rep stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the trucks were illegally double brokered to different carriers who transferred the product to their trucks after crossing the border.
In an interview with People magazine, Fieri stated that the heist had disrupted their momentum and that the best year they had ever had in Santo would be all people would get.
The distillery is currently operating on a 24/7 schedule to replace the stolen tequila, as stated by Fieri to the outlet.
Santo Spirits typically experiences its highest volume of sales during the holidays, but Fieri believes it unlikely that they will be able to fully replenish their tequila supply in time for the festive season.
Dan Butkus, president of Santo Spirits, expressed concern about the impact of the theft on the distillery and its employees to People.
"It’s really ugly. Santo is a small brand, that really put us back for Christmas, that was our load for the holidays that we were going to sell." — Sammy Hagar
"Our distiller is an independent distiller who relies on our sales for his livelihood and that of his team, as does the entire Santo Spirits team," Butkus stated.
"He stated, "That's the part that hurts me the most." "We need to support both the distillery and U.S. residents, but we can't do it without the revenue from these cases at the moment.""
Hagar stated that the brand will definitely become more cautious in the future with regards to shipping.
"We'll be more cautious," the 77-year-old stated. "You believe that everything is fine, thinking, 'The truck crossed the border, no problem.' However, it crossed the border and was not okay. Therefore, we are now more careful."
The $1M Tequila heist at Border Town was "really ugly," according to Sammy Hagar.
The Santo brand is cherished by the rock star, who explains, "We meticulously trim the agaves, leaving only the desired color and flavor. Unlike others, we do not add sugars or coloring agents. Instead, we let the agave mature in the barrel until it reaches its peak."
Hagar was also proud to celebrate Metallica at their benefit show.
"I've known these guys for a long time, and they opened for Van Halen on the Monsters of Rock tour. At the time, they hadn't yet broken through, but I knew who they were and believed in their potential. I got them on the tour because I'm from the Bay Area and had connections. James Hetfield asked me to do this, and I agreed."
He stated, "My main focus is on nourishing individuals and providing education, particularly for children, and this location is ideal for achieving those goals."
