$1 million of tequila stolen in a double heist as Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar's trucks cross the border.
The Van Halen singer stated that the theft of two trucks was a significant setback, but he and Fieri were relieved that no one was injured during the crime.
The theft of two freight trucks carrying $1 million in product significantly impacted the tequila business of Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar.
The tequila brand Santo Spirits is co-owned by the celebrity chef, 56, and the former Van Halen singer, 77. Over the weekend of Nov. 9 in Laredo, Texas, the trucks carrying Santo Spirits were hijacked, according to a representative for Hagar who spoke to Planet Chronicle Digital.
The missing trucks were carrying 24,240 bottles of Santo Blanco and Reposado, as well as a specially made Extra Añejo that was aged for 39 months.
Hagar's representative stated that the trucks were illegally double-brokered to different carriers who transferred the product to their trucks after crossing the border from Mexico to Texas.
It's unfortunate that this happened to Santo, a growing company, during its strongest year to date and just before the holidays, as Hagar stated in a Planet Chronicle Digital interview.
"This is a huge setback for any company in a hugely competitive market," said the "I Can't Drive 55" rocker. "But Guy and I will survive. Most of all, we're glad that nobody was hurt during this crime."
Fieri and Hagar discovered the heist on Nov. 14, as revealed in an interview with People magazine.
"Our best year in Santo has been achieved through our hard work," the Food Network star stated. "We had a lot of momentum, but now all that's available on the shelf is what people will receive."
Fieri informed People that the Mexican distillery's workers were working around the clock to replace the stolen tequila.
Santos Spirits typically experiences its highest volume of sales during the holidays, but Fieri stated that it was unlikely they would be able to fully replenish their tequila supply in time for this period.
The "Ultimate Recipe Showdown" alum revealed to People that someone may be attempting to disrupt the momentum their tequila business had built in the marketplace.
Fieri also expressed his surprise that two trucks were targeted by the thieves.
"Fieri stated, "One is one, but now you need twice as many people to execute a double heist. It seems riskier to use two trucks.""
Dan Butkus, president of Santo Spirits, expressed concern to People about the impact of the theft of 440 cases of tequila on their distillery and employees.
"Our distiller is an independent distiller who relies on our sales for his livelihood and that of his team, as does the entire Santo Spirits team," Butkus stated.
"He stated, "That's the part that hurts me the most." "We need to support both the distillery and U.S. residents, but we can't do it without the revenue from these cases at the moment.""
The Laredo Police Department, Los Angeles' Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team, and the federal cargo theft prevention and recovery network CargoNet are investigating the reported crimes.
Anyone who can find the lost trucks will receive a $10,000 reward from Fieri.
He explained that the Extra Añejo is the crown jewel of the company, something that took four years to make and cannot be replicated.
"Fieri stated, "This heist is like a movie - I never imagined it would happen in this way, but it's happening.""
