The DOJ watchdog has urged the FBI to intensify its efforts in combating sex crimes committed against children.
Approximately 13% of the cases audited by the FBI during the investigation were flagged, according to the OIJ report.
A report from the Department of Justice revealed on Thursday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation frequently mishandled cases involving child sex crimes.
The OIJ commenced its investigation into the FBI's handling of Nassar's reports after receiving allegations of mishandling.
Immediate attention was required for 42 incidents (13% of all audited incidents) as flagged by the audit.
"The report states that we found no evidence that FBI employees complied with mandatory reporting requirements to SLTT law enforcement in 47 percent of the incidents we reviewed or to social services agencies in 50 percent of incidents we reviewed. Additionally, we found that only 43 percent of the reports made were made within 24 hours, as required by FBI policy."
The FBI was found to have inadequately investigated Nassar, resulting in a $138.7 million settlement from the Justice Department for 139 claims.
The FBI should improve its handling of child sex abuse cases by implementing 11 recommendations, such as monitoring compliance with mandatory reporting, providing clearer guidelines on when incidents need to be marked "Time Sensitive," and ensuring that sex crime notifications are properly documented.
The FBI is committed to ensuring the safety and security of children with the highest standards. The FBI's efforts to combat crimes against children are among the most critical and demanding undertakings they do.
"The FBI is dedicated to preserving the public's trust in us by implementing improvements to our Violent Crimes Against Children program to ensure its intended effectiveness."
FBI agents are being urged by OIJ officials to receive additional training, controls, and oversight, including setting a limit on the number of cases they handle involving child crimes.
