Mike Tomlin criticizes George Pickens' behavior: "Grow up quickly, Pickens"
In the win over the Bengals, the Bengals had a touchdown and 2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
On Sunday, after the Pittsburgh Steelers won 44-38 against the Cincinnati Bengals, head coach Mike Tomlin criticized wide receiver George Pickens.
Despite leading the team with three catches for 75 yards and a first-quarter touchdown, Pickens was unhappy with the penalties he committed. The wide receiver had two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in the game. Pittsburgh was charged with nine penalties for 103 yards.
"Tomlin advised reporters via ESPN that George needs to grow up quickly as this is an emotional game and divisional games are significant. George has a target on his back because he is George, but he understands it."
Pickens’ conduct has been under the microscope this season.
In their Thursday night match last month, Cleveland Browns defensive back Greg Newsome II accused him of taking plays off earlier this season, in addition to getting into a fight with him.
On Sunday, Pickens escaped a costly ejection due to his penalties. A flag was thrown after he made a "violent gesture" while picking up a first down. The NFL officials thought he was making a gun-like gesture, which has been prevalent in the league this season, resulting in a penalty being called. Pickens claimed that officials misunderstood his hand gestures.
In the first quarter, he threw a ball at a group of Bengals players, resulting in another penalty.
Pickens said he did not need to do anything differently.
He told reporters that he could continue with his routes and playing, and he was content with the team's victory, even if there were "ticky-tack" calls.
This season, the Steelers' receiving corps has been brightened by Pickens, who has 55 catches for 850 yards and three touchdowns.
The AFC North division is currently led by the Steelers, who have a record of 9 wins and 3 losses this season.
