A walk-on teammate of a New Mexico basketball player was allegedly punched by the player over a plane seat, according to reports.
The university is investigating the matter.
According to multiple reports, the University of New Mexico is currently investigating an incident that occurred last month on a flight involving two members of the men's basketball team. It is alleged that one player physically assaulted another during the flight.
A walk-on player of the Lobos basketball team was reportedly punched in the shoulder by a scholarship player while traveling to Palm Springs for the Acrisure Classic just before Thanksgiving, according to KOB 4 after speaking to the family of the suspected victim.
Neither player was named.
The family claimed that the argument on the plane was due to a dispute over where the walk-on player was sitting. Additionally, they stated that the player was punched in the same shoulder that was already injured and in a sling because of it. After the team returned, the player was treated at a hospital in Albuquerque.
The family claimed that a similar incident with the same player happened at the hotel on the same day.
The coaching staff was informed of the incident by the alleged victim, but the victim later claimed that no action was taken.
The attorney for the walk-on player informed KRQE that the scholarship player was permitted to participate in two games following the occurrence of the incident.
The university is investigating the incident, as stated by their representatives to Planet Chronicle Digital.
