Youngkin's 9/11 remarks disrupted by climate protesters: 'Unrespectful to our country'
'Keep carbon in the soil, no more oil,' the protesters chanted.
During his speech to the Federalist Society and Defense of Freedom Institute (DFI), Virginia Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin was interrupted by climate change protesters while recounting his visit to Arlington Cemetery's 9/11 Memorial earlier in the morning.
Youngkin shifted his conversation after speaking for several minutes, recalling the Virginians and Americans who perished in the terrorist attack on the Defense Department headquarters 23 years ago on Wednesday.
A woman at the protest shouted that Youngkin was "unsuitable" and that "future generations would recall him as a climate offender."
Youngkin scolded the protesters, stating that it was the worst possible time for them to express themselves.
Youngkin stated that today is a day of solemn remembrance, as he recently visited Arlington National Cemetery and had the honor and privilege of laying a wreath at both the Pentagon Group Memorial Burial marker and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Recalling the day in 2001, he spoke about the mother and sister of a victim he met at the memorial while hearing a plane overhead in the cemetery.
A banner with an offensive nickname for the governor was unfurled by several protesters who moved to the front of the room mid-sentence.
"Right now, I'm talking about 9/11," Youngkin said, speaking over the protesters and into his microphone.
"Nothing could be more disrespectful to our nation than what you are doing right now."
As Youngkin was approached by aides, the undeterred climate protesters chanted: "No more oil, keep the carbon in the soil."
The governor persisted with his speech, disregarding the protesters' shouts, stating, "Today is a day to contemplate America."
"Today, we should remember that 3,000 men and women lost their lives on 9/11, that evil exists in the world, and that there are brave individuals who put their lives on the line to protect peace."
Youngkin's representative referred to his response to protesters who interrupted him as evidence of his stance.
