What were the risks for each side in the debate throwdown between Biden and Trump?
To spice things up, Joe had to take action.
Candidates debate when they have to debate.
That’s why Donald Trump didn’t during the primaries.
Yesterday, Joe Biden agreed to two debates despite his low poll numbers.
Why did Trump, who had been requesting a direct comparison, immediately agree to appear on my show?
Both camps agreed to do the faceoffs on CNN and ABC within a couple of hours, with four networks deemed eligible. CNN has already announced Jake Tapper and Dana Bash as moderators.
Trump has agreed to two key Biden conditions, but he is not someone who likes others dictating the rules.
Biden doesn't want a boisterous audience, like Trump's rallies, where supporters cheer loudly. Instead, he wants a calm debate that focuses on policy. (Trump stated his preference for large venues to create excitement.)
Biden wants a mute button during debates to prevent interruptions and ensure each candidate has equal time to speak. This is a measure to avoid a repeat of the 2020 debate where Trump frequently interrupted or talked over Biden and moderator Chris Wallace. The former president may not be pleased with this proposal.
Yesterday morning at 8 a.m. Eastern, Biden released a brief and sarcastic video that became public.
"He wants to debate me again. Great, let's do it!"
The man doesn't make a convincing Clint Eastwood.
"I'll do it twice, so let's pick the dates. I hear you're free on Wednesdays, Donald."
Trump accepted that "Crooked Joe Biden is the WORST debater I have ever faced" and "can’t put two sentences together."
The upcoming events are crucial and could significantly impact the election's outcome, just as Ronald Reagan's statement to Jimmy Carter in 1980 did.
To shake things up, Joe had to do something, as his team belatedly recognized that he was on track to lose the election. He had been shielded and barely making any news, even before Trump's hush money trial began.
The Biden campaign believes that his superior knowledge will become clear in straightforward debates. Additionally, there is a belief that the more the public witnesses Trump, who has been confined in a Manhattan courtroom, the better it will be for the president.
While Biden's elderly appearance and thin voice may be seen as a contrast to Trump's physical presence and bombastic style, they are only 3-½ years apart.
Donald can concentrate and exercise self-control when he chooses to.
The Commission on Presidential Debates, which has been responsible for organizing fall events since 1988, is becoming obsolete. The panel, which is limited to three October debates after early voting begins and has moderators who are often criticized, is no longer trusted by both candidates. As a result, both candidates are abandoning the bipartisan organization.
There are rumors that Trump may withdraw, but I believe he will stay committed. Additionally, I didn't anticipate his opponent would participate.
Biden's decision to take a risk will determine whether his strategy succeeds.
