Voters in battleground states hold Democrats responsible for the "toxic" language that led to threats against Trump's life.
Flint, Michigan, residents voice worries about divisive political discourse: "we've lost sight of compassion"
In Flint, Michigan, former President Donald Trump's town hall attendees accused Democrats of causing the two assassination attempts on him through their words.
A voter at the Trump town hall stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that they believe it's not gun control that is the solution, but rather the language used in discussions about it. They pointed out that certain statements should not be made.
Since the shooting incident at Trump International Golf Club in Florida on Sunday, Trump has held his first campaign event. The shooter, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was spotted by U.S. Secret Service agents when he was approximately 300-500 yards away from Trump, prompting him to flee the scene.
Routh was captured later Sunday, while Trump was uninjured in the incident.
Trump survived another attempt on his life, two months after being grazed in the ear by a bullet during a rally in Pennsylvania.
Trump has accused President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of inciting violence through their "rhetoric," claiming that the assassins were motivated by "highly inflammatory language" from Democrats.
"Trump stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the suspected gunman was influenced by the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, and he acted on it. Trump added, "Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country, and they are the ones that are destroying the country — both from the inside and out.""
Before Trump's town hall event in Flint, voters largely agreed with his remarks, with one telling Planet Chronicle Digital that "political rhetoric is at an all-time high."
Another voter stated that America has become so toxic that we've forgotten to love each other and have started a war within ourselves.
"No reason whatsoever," another Democrat added when asked who was to blame for the attempts on Trump’s life. "They continue to say he’s a threat to democracy."
The Michigan election in November will be crucial in deciding the presidential winner, as the Trump event occurs just beforehand.
In the latest Real Clear Politics Polling average, Harris has a slimmer lead over Trump by under one percentage point in the state, compared to the larger margins enjoyed by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Biden at similar points in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
