Vance clarifies 'childless cat lady' remark, stating it was a misunderstood joke by Democrats.
In 2021, JD Vance stated that the future of the Democrats is determined by childless individuals.
During a recent interview, Sen. JD Vance admitted that his regret in referring to some leaders as "childless cat ladies" was that "a lot of people took it the wrong way."
Vance has faced criticism for a 2021 remark he made about the country being run by "childless cat ladies" and Democrats and corporate oligarchs.
The senator claims that the statement was misconstrued.
On Sunday, Vance stated on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he desires to be the country's vice president and represent all individuals. He also admitted to making a sarcastic remark years ago about Democrats misinterpreting his comment, which he believes was taken out of context.
Vance was then pressed again on whether he regretted the comment.
"Vance stated that he would occasionally say things that people disagreed with, as he was a real person who made jokes and spoke sarcastically. He emphasized the importance of focusing on policy rather than getting caught up in personal disagreements. Additionally, Vance acknowledged that while he had regrets, making a joke three years ago was not among his top 10."
The Ohio senator stated that he believes the U.S. is becoming increasingly "anti-family" and advocates for providing women with more options for starting families.
""If you speak with young women, regardless of whether they have kids or not, they often express that they feel limited in their choices," he stated."
Since being chosen as former President Donald Trump's 2024 running mate, Vance has faced criticism from Democrats regarding his statement.
At the DNC, both Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Oprah Winfrey deemed it "offensive."
"Winfrey stated at the DNC that although some may believe we are different from our neighbors, we all share a common goal when a house is on fire - to save the people inside, regardless of their race, religion, partner, or voting history. Even if the homeowner is a childless cat lady, we try to rescue their cat as well."
