Alaskan leaders advised that the only appropriate reaction to the deployment of 130 airborne soldiers to a remote Aleutian Islands base during joint Russian-Chinese military tests in the region should be a show of American strength.

The U.S. Army deployed soldiers to Eareckson Air Station on Shemya Island, just over 300 miles from Kamchatka, Russia, during the "Ocean 2024" joint military exercises with a major U.S. rival.

Russian state media reported that over 15 warships in the region conducted missile launches, in addition to other activities. This news comes after a July incident where U.S. F-16s and Canadian CF-18s were dispatched to intercept two Russian and two Chinese bombers off Alaska.

Maj. Gen. Joseph Hilbert, commander of the 11th Airborne based out of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) in Anchorage, stated that the U.S. response ensured Army capabilities, as reported by the Alaska Beacon.

"Hilbert emphasized the importance of our nation's defense and the preservation of a free and open Indo-Pacific. He stated that our ability to deploy combat-credible forces quickly and effectively to any location, regardless of remoteness, is crucial in supporting the nation and our strong relationships with allies and partner nations."

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy stated that Russia and his state are separated by less than two miles at their closest point, between Big and Little Diomede Islands in the Bering Sea. The Inupiaq village located on the latter island can see across to Russia.

In a Tuesday interview, Dunleavy stated that we reside in a perilous area.

"Unlike most states, we are unique in having flyovers near our territorial zones. We have the Russians and Chinese passing through the Bering Strait."

The U.S. response to the 24 Ocean 24 drills was prompted by a perceived message from the Russians, although the exact nature of the message is unclear. The personnel in the western Aleutians were beefed up in response.

Alaska is ready to safeguard its land and the U.S., if required, according to Dunleavy.

Numerous high-end military bases are located throughout the state, including JBER, Clear Space Force Station in Fairbanks, Fort Greely in Delta Junction, and the Near Islands station, which is currently receiving additional troops.

"Our forces are capable of deploying quickly, and we have a missile defense shield in place to protect against North Korean missile launches. Therefore, we are not concerned about Russia harming Alaska."

Dunleavy affirmed that former President Trump's assertion that U.S. rivals wouldn't engage in such aggressive behavior under his leadership is accurate.

"As Americans, we see the world in a certain way. However, this is not always how the world sees itself. The world can be dangerous, and once people perceive weakness, they often take advantage of it, as seen in the Middle East, China, and Russia."

According to Reuters, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the Ocean 24 exercises as the largest in three decades.

""In the face of increasing global geopolitical tensions, it is crucial to enhance military cooperation with friendly states," Putin stated."

Putin stated that America is attempting to preserve its global military and political supremacy, even if it means incurring significant costs. He added that the U.S. aims to inflict a strategic defeat in Ukraine and disrupt the existing security framework in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, a Marine Corps Forces Reserves colonel with 30 years of active-duty service and deployments, national security threats are being ignored by too many people in Washington.

"According to Sullivan, the Chinese and Russians in both the North Pacific and Arctic are escalating in ways that have never been seen before because they have never operated jointly like this."

Alaska has experienced its share of Russian "Bear" bombers threatening the state, but last summer, a 12-ship joint Russian-Chinese naval task force was present off our coast, which is unprecedented.

"In response to the actions of the Russians and Chinese, we must continue to deploy our military assets in order to confront them on our own turf. While this may seem distant to many Americans, it is a matter of national security and a responsibility we cannot ignore."

The 11th Airborne's new presence on the Aleutian chain was observed by him, and he stated that another task force would be arriving from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Olympia, Washington.

Sullivan stated that he frequently invites high-ranking military officials to Alaska and included a provision in the NDAA to investigate the significant Aleutian island of Adak, where the U.S. previously operated a submarine and airbase.

Alaskan Native corporations who own land on Adak, near Dutch Harbor, have reportedly been approached by Russian interests, according to Sullivan.

He blamed Democrats at present for holding up any substantive political response.

"In the Senate, Chuck Schumer stated that he doesn't care about national security," he said.

"For three months, the NDAA has been sitting around. We are currently voting on district court judges, and even some Democrat senators are urging Schumer to bring the National Defense Authorization Act to the floor. However, he is not doing it at the moment."

Throughout the presidencies of Carter, Clinton, Obama, and Biden, Democrats have consistently tried to reduce defense spending.

The Republican administrations of Presidents Reagan, Eisenhower, both Bushes, and Trump all did the opposite of what he said.

"Sending the wrong signal to adversaries like Xi Jinping and the ayatollahs in Iran is provocative and shows weakness, as we're seeing in a huge example," Sullivan stated.

This week, Sullivan stated that there were four foreign incursions into Alaska's ADIZ, with three occurring by air and one by sea.

The unannounced incursions into the ADIZ, a hypothetical ring outside the nation's true border, are concerning.

According to Sullivan, U.S. military craft need multiple refuelings to reach the western Aleutians, which are over 1,000 miles from Anchorage. In contrast, the Russians only need to travel about the distance from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. to threaten U.S. soil.

"While our military performs exceptionally well, we require additional resources to safeguard not only Alaska but also the entire country. In the event of a potential attack by cruise or ballistic missiles, we are the most vulnerable point of entry for the rest of the nation."

"Defending Alaska airspace and Alaska water protects all of America."
