Trump declares plans to impose a 200% tax on Mexican auto imports, rendering them unmarketable in the US.
Trump remarked after the statement: "You wonder why I get shot"
In Flint, Michigan, during a campaign town hall on Tuesday night, former President Trump discussed his plan to impose a 200% tariff on all Mexican auto imports, stating that it would render them "unmarketable" in the US.
"Tariffs are the greatest thing ever invented," Trump stated at the town hall event hosted by Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders. "I brought in $467 billion from China. No one else did."
Trump used a tale about a friend in the auto industry to justify his proposal for a 200% tax on Mexican auto imports. Trump requested to see a modern, cutting-edge automaking facility in the U.S., but his friend claimed it was impossible because the major plants are located in Mexico and are mostly owned by China.
"Trump announced on Tuesday evening that he plans to impose a 200% tariff on cars made in Mexico, rendering them unsellable in the United States."
After declaring, "You wonder why I get shot," Trump joked, "Because I'm a real estate developer."
He observed that expressing a sentiment like "taxing Chinese auto imports" would make him a target, just as only presidents who take decisive actions face opposition.
"You have to do what you have to do," Trump conceded.
The former president stated that in order to preserve the country, we must display courage.
A retired autoworker who has spent 36 years on manufacturing floors at Ford, Chrysler, and Stellantis spoke to Planet Chronicle Digital about why he and other pro-Trump autoworkers are supporting the former president over Kamala Harris. He explained that Trump's opposition to Democratic efforts to impose electric vehicle mandates and other green regulations in the auto industry, as well as his replacement of the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the stricter trade rules under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), were significant factors in their decision.
"Kamala Harris has stated that she wants all vehicles in the US to be zero-emission by 2035. She supported legislation related to this when she was a senator. However, Pannebecker argues that Harris lacks knowledge about manufacturing and the economy, and that she is a San Francisco liberal district attorney who has been involved in California's economic struggles."
The Trump campaign did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment before publication.
