Top 5 standout moments from the Trump-Harris presidential debate: "I'm speaking now"
On Tuesday night, Trump and Harris had their first encounter.
On Tuesday, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ABC News moderated a debate between former President Trump and Vice President Harris.
The event was the first presidential debate since President Biden ended his campaign and Democrats nominated Harris for president.
The debate featured a range of topics and included several attacks, but certain moments stood out particularly. Here are the top 5 moments from the confrontation.
1. Trump says he wanted to send Harris a MAGA hat
Trump stated that he planned to give Harris a MAGA hat as a reference to her adopting his political views on the campaign trail. He said during the debate, "Everything she believed three and four years ago is no longer relevant; she has now embraced my philosophy."
In 2019, Harris changed her policy positions and became more moderate, diverging from her previous stance on several issues.
"If she were elected, she would change it, which would be detrimental to our country as she is a Marxist, Trump cautioned."
Trump claims that he believes he may have been shot in the head due to the rhetoric of the Biden-Harris campaign.
The former president countered Harris' accusations of authoritarianism by suggesting that her and Biden's comments may have incited the assassination attempt against him in July.
Trump denied weaponizing, stating that it was Harris who did so.
"I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that they say about me," he said. Trump was shot in the ear at a July rally in Pennsylvania before the Secret Service killed the shooter and escorted him offstage.
Trump stated, "They discuss democracy, yet I am perceived as a threat to democracy. On the other hand, the fake Russia Russia Russia probe, which resulted in nothing, poses a greater danger to democracy."
3. Harris says she is not Joe Biden
The vice president stated, "I am not Joe Biden," after Trump criticized the Biden-Harris administration's economic policy and referred to Biden as "she."
"She is trying to get away from Biden," he said.
Harris clarified that she is not Biden and emphasized that she is "absolutely not" Donald Trump.
She stated that she provides a new generation of leadership for our country.
4. Harris stands by administration's Afghanistan withdrawal despite criticism
Was Harris asked by a moderator if he believed he bore any responsibility for the way withdrawal played out?
She agreed with President Biden's decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, she stated.
"Four presidents said they would and Joe Biden did."
In the aftermath of the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, 13 U.S. service members were killed in a terrorist attack. Trump also highlighted the unorganized departure that left U.S. resources and equipment behind in the country.
Harris did not answer ABC's moderators' question about whether she feels any responsibility for the nature of the withdrawal.
5. Trump uses famous Harris line against her
On Tuesday evening, Trump employed a remark similar to one made by Harris during the 2020 vice presidential debate.
The former president said, "Please, wait a minute, I'm talking now."
Trump said that Harris was a supporter of defunding the police, but her microphone was muted, so her response could not be heard.
Trump's remark was a response to Harris' statement in 2020, where she said, "Mr. Vice President, I'm speaking. I'm speaking," while Pence tried to interrupt.
