The White House reacts to NYC Labor Day protesters brandishing Hamas and Hezbollah flags.
The protest occurred one day after Israel discovered the bodies of 6 hostages, including an Israeli-American.
The White House strongly condemned protesters in New York City who waved flags supporting Hamas and Hezbollah on Labor Day.
The Biden-Harris Administration strongly condemns any association with the terrorist organization Hamas, as President Biden and Vice President Harris have stated. White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates made this clear in a statement Monday evening, calling the protest demonstration that included the Hamas flag "especially heinous" given that it occurred on the same day as the funeral for Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, one of the six dead Hamas hostages found by Israeli forces over the weekend.
Bates stated that it is particularly reprehensible to publicly support Hamas on the same day as the funeral for an American hostage who was brutally murdered by them. This is an opportunity for all Americans to unite and condemn Antisemitism and the vile hatred and wickedness that Hamas embodies.
On Monday, a protest dubbed "Flood NYC for Gaza" was organized by the group Within Our Lifetime. Since Hamas's massacre on Oct. 7, the group has led large protests in the Big Apple, sometimes causing roads, trains, and parts of the airport to shut down in response. The group's founder, Nerdeen Kiswani, has called for the expulsion of "Zionists" from the city. The group has been charged as being antisemitic by critics.
On Monday, thousands of protesters gathered in Union Square, Manhattan, and later marched to Washington Square Park, with some demonstrators waving the flags of anti-Israel terror groups, including Hamas.
"Protesters chanted 'Resistance is justified when people are occupied' and four were arrested, according to The New York Post," the article stated.
The Labor Day protest is not the first time Within Our Lifetime has organized protests where terror symbols have appeared. In June, the group held at least two anti-Israel protests in New York City that included protesters waving Hamas’ flag, carrying a Hezbollah flag and holding up a portrait of Hamas’s Gaza ruler and Oct. 7 massacre mastermind Yahya Sinwar, according to publicly available video from the protest shared on social media.
During the protest outside the exhibit honoring those who died at the Nova Music Festival on Oct. 7, Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams deemed the symbolism present as "pure antisemitism."
The mayor stated that any New Yorker who supports peace cannot stand near those waving Hamas and Hezbollah flags, particularly at an event honoring the victims of the Nova Music Festival massacre.
