The southern border crisis contributed to a significant increase in crossings from Canada, according to an expert.
This year, one northern sector has experienced more encounters than the total of the previous 13 years.
One expert contends that diverting resources to tackle the influx of migrants at the southern border has led to an increase in new crossings at the northern border.
"Lora Ries, director of the Heritage Foundation's Border Security and Immigration Center, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the southern border consistently receives attention, resources, and funding, while the northern border has vast, unguarded areas. According to Ries, during the Biden administration, the large number of crossings on the southern border led to the diversion of resources from the northern border, leaving even fewer guards to protect the area."
The Swanton Border Sector has recorded the largest volume of apprehensions in its history, with over 15,000 apprehensions in the first 10 months of fiscal 2024, despite President Biden being in office for only one year.
The northern border has experienced a surge in traffic, with the sector covering 295 miles of the Canadian border seeing a record of 190,000 encounters in fiscal 2023 and more than 162,000 so far in the current fiscal year.
Over 1,100 known or suspected terrorists (KSTs) were encountered at the northern border between 2021 and 2023, which accounts for more than half of the more than 1,700 apprehended at the border nationwide.
The northern border presents a challenge for the U.S. Border Patrol, which is more than double the number of miles as the southern border with Mexico. The northern border also presents unique challenges to agents, including maritime crossings throughout the Great Lakes region.
Ries stated that the challenges with immigration have intensified under Biden, as the administration's lenient immigration policies have encouraged people to cross and have necessitated the allocation of more resources to the Mexican border.
The world knows they can enter through our open border, and migrants from various locations will utilize different crossings based on the circumstances, as Ries pointed out.
"Because smugglers and traffickers adapt, we're seeing these numbers," Ries stated.
The number of migrants attempting to enter the country illegally through the northern border has increased from previous years, with individuals from 85 different countries making the attempt, according to a CBS 19 report.
On Tuesday, a White House spokesperson stated that Biden has made efforts to find bipartisan solutions to secure the border and fix the immigration system. However, Congressional Republicans have twice rejected the toughest and fairest bipartisan border security agreement in decades.
The spokesperson stated that President Biden's actions in June have significantly reduced encounters at the Southern border, and the Department of Homeland Security recently announced changes to improve their ability to remove individuals encountered along the Northern border.
Biden's decision to restart the CHNV parole program will increase the burden at the northern border, according to Ries, who predicts that numbers will continue to climb as long as he remains in office.
If individuals are motivated to arrive here promptly while Biden remains in office, then we can expect an increase in numbers, according to Ries.
The White House did not immediately respond to a follow-up request for comment.
