The race to replace the Republican governor in a blue state is heating up as the primary season concludes on Tuesday.
The final state primaries of the 2024 election cycle will be held in New Hampshire, Delaware, and Rhode Island.
In the 2024 election cycle, the final states will hold primaries after six months of contests, with voters in Delaware, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island casting their ballots on Tuesday.
The upcoming gubernatorial primaries in New Hampshire, featuring the competitive and combustible Republican and Democrat candidates, are a race to succeed GOP Gov. Chris Sununu, who has completed four successful two-year terms as the Granite State governor.
This year, the governor's race in New Hampshire, a swing state in general elections, is the only competitive race in the country, according to political analysts.
Kelly Ayotte, a former state attorney general who lost her Senate re-election in 2016, is currently leading the polls and fundraising efforts for the Republican nomination.
This year, Ayotte backed Trump's bid for re-election to the White House.
In the race, Chuck Morse, a former state Senate President and known for his conservative views and support for Trump, has been highlighted by his opponent. However, the former president maintained neutrality in the contest.
Earlier this year, Ayotte stated on Planet Chronicle that she supports the path of prosperity and freedom that Gov. Sununu has led, and she wants to continue down that path. She appreciates his leadership and the work he has done, and she wants to continue his success for the state.
Ayotte's conservative credentials and support for Trump have been repeatedly questioned by Morse as a senator.
""I believe there is a significant distinction between myself and Kelly Ayotte, as I began as a conservative and remained one as Senate president, and I pledge to be a conservative governor. In contrast, Kelly did not maintain her conservative stance while in Washington," Morse stated this summer."
Ayotte countered Morse's criticisms by highlighting Morse's unsuccessful Senate nomination bid in 2022 and stated, "I've known Chuck for a long time, and this is a disappointing way for him to conclude his political career."
The Republican nominee will compete in an eight-week race to the general election against either former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig or Cinde Warmington, the only Democrat on New Hampshire's Executive Council, which oversees state agency heads, judges, and major state contracts.
The Democrat's nomination battle has become a verbal conflict, similar to the Republican gubernatorial primary.
In a state affected by the opioid epidemic, Craig recently released an advertisement attacking Warmington's previous work as a lobbyist for Purdue Pharma, the pharmaceutical company responsible for producing the infamous painkiller OxyContin.
Warmington countered with an ad attacking Craig's motives, claiming he launched a personal attack to divert attention from her successful management of New Hampshire's largest city during crises in crime and homelessness.
The race to succeed retiring six-term Democrat Rep. Annie Kuster in the 2nd Congressional District, which covers the western half and northern region of New Hampshire, is also gaining attention.
Colin Van Ostern, a former staffer and former executive councilor who lost the 2016 gubernatorial election to Sununu, is being supported by Kuster.
Maggie Hassan, a former governor, and John Lynch, a former four-term governor, are supporting Maggie Goodlander, a former top lawyer in President Biden's administration, who served as a deputy assistant attorney general at the Justice Department and is married to Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan.
The Democrat congressional primary became bitter with accusations of being a carpetbagger against Goodlander, who resided outside the district for many years and, through her spouse, has ties to prominent Democrats, including former President Clinton and former Secretary of State and 2016 Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
In the crowded Republican primary field, Vikram Mansharamani, who ran unsuccessfully for the 2022 GOP Senate nomination, and Lily Tang Williams, who is making her second straight bid for the congressional nomination, are considered the front-runners.
Delaware's governor, Democrat John Carney, is running for mayor of Wilmington instead of seeking re-election as governor since he is term-limited. Carney previously served as Delaware's lone member of the U.S. House and later as lieutenant governor before being elected and re-elected as governor.
Three Democrats, including Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer and National Wildlife Federation CEO Collin O'Mara, are vying for the seat of Governor Carney in the Democrat primary.
Three individuals, including retired police officer Jerry Price, state House Minority Leader Michael Ramone, and small business owner Bobby Williamson, are vying for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.
The open lieutenant governor's seat and the state's U.S. House seat have primary candidates, including Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester, who is running to succeed retiring Sen. Tom Carper.
In Rhode Island, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat, faces a primary challenge from Mike Costa, a former Republican gubernatorial candidate.
In the upcoming general election in the reliably blue state, Rep. Patrick Morgan is the leading candidate for the GOP Senate nomination and would face a challenging task in defeating the incumbent, President Biden.
