The House GOP is introducing legislation to prevent China from gaining entry to American ports.

GOP Rep. Michelle Steel is introducing legislation to restrict entry of U.S. ports by China and its allies.

The Secure Our Ports Act, which prohibits companies owned fully or in-part by state-owned enterprises in China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran from operating or managing a U.S. port, was introduced by Steel, R-Calif., a member of the House Select Committee on Communist China.

Steel stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that if adversaries gain access to U.S. ports, they can harm U.S. supply chains by obtaining shipping infrastructure.

Steel argued that her bill would strengthen America's economic and national security against threats from Communist China and their allies.

"To safeguard America's supply chains, Congress must limit enemy governments' access to our ports, as stated by Steel to Planet Chronicle Digital. "Threatening the existence of the United States should not grant enemy governments easy access to our port infrastructure, a vital component of America's supply chains.""

The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach, both located in Southern California, are among the largest ports in the United States.

Numerous China-owned conglomerates have an active presence in American ports, with COSCO on the West Coast and COFCO on the Mississippi River, according to Steel's office, as reported to Planet Chronicle Digital.

The legislation is supported by Reps. Stephanie Bice, Ken Calvert, Rick Crawford, Richard Hudson, Doug LaMalfa, Nicole Malliotakis, James Moylan, Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen, John Rutherford, and Randy Weber.

Officials have proposed that Chinese equipment and cranes at U.S. ports could be used for surveillance, leading to the bill.
