Senator under fire for voting in unison with Harris: 'Extreme ideology'
In 2020, Ohio was won by Trump with an 8-point margin.
The shift in focus in the Ohio Senate race is due to Kamala Harris' rise as the Democratic presidential nominee, which leads to a comparison of her record with that of a vulnerable incumbent in a crucial swing state.
Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown has been criticized by his GOP opponent Bernie Moreno for consistently voting with the Biden-Harris administration, which indicates that the two are in agreement, according to the Moreno campaign.
According to Reagan McCarthy, the Moreno campaign's communications director, Sherrod Brown and Kamala Harris collaborated to pass the most liberal agenda in American history. Brown completely agrees with Harris's radical views and will help implement the Green New Deal, Medicare for illegals, and tax increases on the middle class.
Harris and Brown worked together in the Senate from 2017 to 2021, where they developed a close professional relationship and often complemented each other.
On average, Brown voted with Harris 84% of the time during their two sessions of Congress together. Prior to her entry into the 2024 race, GovTrack rated Harris as the most "liberal" member of the Senate.
Over the course of four years, Brown and Harris collaborated on nearly 500 legislative proposals.
Several bills were introduced that affected various aspects of American society, including the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, Senate Bill 2233, the No Ban Act, legislation to establish a committee exploring reparation payments for black Americans, and legislation to ban oil operations on more than 1.5 million acres of federal land.
The two senators collaborated on the SECURE Act, which aimed to provide permanent residency to certain undocumented individuals.
According to Philip Letsou, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Kamala Harris, a socialist from San Francisco, was the most liberal member of the Senate, and Sherrod Brown was her ally on issues such as mass amnesty, reparations, and eliminating private health insurance.
"It is surprising that Brown, who was happy to campaign with Harris in 2018 and even wanted to be her vice president, is now refusing to commit to campaigning with her at the top of the ticket."
Brown thanked Harris for using his phrase "dignity of work" as a motto when she ran for president in 2019 and for calling him her "friend" on multiple occasions.
"VP Harris, good to see you. If I didn't already love you, I did after our discussion about the dignity of work and Dr. King's belief that all labor has dignity. Your fight for fair wages and your commitment to serving the people who matter to you has made a significant impact on me."
Over the years, including the 2018 election cycle, Brown and Harris have been friendly with each other on the campaign trail, with Brown receiving $10,000 from Harris' Fearless for the People leadership PAC.
Brown expressed gratitude for @KamalaHarris' support during the fall, as they work towards creating a fair and equal society for all individuals, regardless of their background.
Harris attended an October canvass kickoff and rally for Brown during his 2018 campaign, which Brown thanked her for on social media.
""Sherrod Brown is a fearless fighter for workers in the Senate," Harris wrote in 2019."
Some experts believe that Brown's re-election in Ohio may be improved by Harris's entry into the race, as the two have a strong connection in their records.
The Sherrod Brown campaign will greatly benefit from having Harris take over, according to University of Akron political science professor Dave Cohen, as stated in Spectrum News 1.
"Sherrod Brown will campaign with Kamala Harris, according to Cohen."
Sherrod Brown's campaign spokesperson, Eliza Green, stated that Brown would not comment on whether he would campaign for Kamala Harris, but emphasized that Brown is focused on working for Ohio and has stood up to his own party to oppose bad trade deals and supported Border Patrol agents and law enforcement officers.
"Bernie Moreno is attempting to divert Ohioans' attention from his record by destroying evidence he was legally obligated to retain, in an effort to evade paying his employees and opposing a robust border security bill."
The campaign highlighted Brown's opposition to various Biden administration policies, such as the Green New Deal, "Medicare-for-all," energy regulations, tariffs on China, and the most conservative border bill in decades.
