Senator's Remark: Trump Supporters' Racism Helps Them
Former President Donald Trump has been labeled racist by Senator Sherrod Brown on numerous occasions.
During an interview with CNN, Sen. Sherrod Brown criticized then-President Donald Trump's supporters, stating that they were backing a "racist" candidate for president in the form of Kamala Harris.
"According to CNN's Anderson Cooper, Brown responded, "I believe it functions," when questioned about Trump's description of Harris as "awful" and "vile.""
"President Trump's supporters love him because he appeals to their anger, fear, resentment, and sometimes racism, according to Brown. However, his supporters are aware that they are supporting a racist for president, but it works for them. This has driven more and more people away from him, including some who voted for him."
In 2019, on NBC's "Meet the Press," Brown made a comment calling Trump racist, which was followed by his 2020 comment.
"Brown stated that our president is a racist and built his political career by questioning the legitimacy and birthplace of the president of the United States. Early in his career, he engaged in discriminatory practices with housing, as reported in numerous news articles."
According to Philip Letsou, spokesperson for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Sherrod Brown frequently insults Trump voters and voted to impeach Trump twice, indicating his dislike for the president and his supporters.
"Now that he requires their support, Brown is attempting to conceal his anti-Trump extremism through deceptive advertisements. It's clear that Shameless Sherrod's desperate maneuver is a transparent attempt to win votes."
In a state where Trump won by 8 points in 2020, Brown, who is running against GOP challenger Bernie Moreno in a closely watched Senate race, introduced a resolution linking the US immigration system to "structural racism."
Members of the Black, Native American, Alaska Native, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic or Latino communities are disproportionately impacted by the criminal justice and immigration enforcement systems and face a higher risk of contracting COVID–19 within prison populations and detention centers due to the over-incarceration of members of those communities, as stated in a resolution earlier this year by Brown.
Did the Brown campaign confirm whether the Ohio senator still supports his 2020 statement regarding Trump's alleged racism?
A Brown campaign spokesperson stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that Sherrod fights for all Ohioans, regardless of their occupation or location, including steelworkers in Cleveland, teachers in Cincinnati, and veterans in Chillicothe.
"Sherrod consistently acts in the best interest of Ohioans, while Bernie Moreno prioritizes his own self-interest and committed several unethical acts, including stealing overtime pay from his workers, destroying crucial evidence ordered by a judge, and selling Chinese-made vehicles that harmed Ohio autoworkers."
The race between Moreno and Brown is predicted to be tight, with Republicans viewing it as a key chance to regain control of the Senate in November.
The Cook Political report ranks the race as a "toss up."
