Minnesota's 8th Congressional District will have a Republican representative in November's election, as incumbent Rep. Pete Stauber defeated his challenger Harry Welter and secured a victory Tuesday night.
Since January 2019, Rep. Pete Stauber has been a member of the House of Representatives, with a reputation for his law enforcement background and commitment to public safety.
Stauber, who worked as a police officer in Duluth, Minnesota before entering politics, has been influenced by his experience in law enforcement to prioritize stronger border security and support for law enforcement agencies. The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49 endorsed him last month.
Harry Welter, originally from Arkansas City, Kansas, now resides in Duluth, Minnesota and works in education. He obtained his bachelor's degree in secondary education from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1973.
While serving on the Duluth school board from 1996 to 2004, Welter gained national attention for using a voodoo doll to symbolize trying to resolve conflicts among board members.
