Oprah Winfrey delivers a scathing critique of a man she once considered running for office with during a surprise appearance at the DNC.
In 2000, the Trump campaign shared a letter written by Winfrey to Donald Trump on social media.
Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, where she criticized former President Trump and his vice president 24 years after she predicted he would be a good president.
"Winfrey stated at the United Center that she is aware of the old techniques used to divert attention from important issues, but she believes that we have moved beyond such tactics as tweets, lies, and foolishness. These times are complex, and therefore, require mature discussions. Winfrey welcomes these conversations because civilized debate is essential to democracy and represents the best of America."
Winfrey took a veiled shot at Trump by saying, "This candidate claims that if we vote just once, we won't have to do it again. But as a registered independent, I'm proud to vote every time because I'm an American. That's what Americans do. Voting is the best of America."
Winfrey criticized Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, for his comments about "childless cat ladies."
"Winfrey stated that when a house is on fire, we don't focus on the homeowners' race, religion, partner, or voting history. Instead, we prioritize saving them. If the house belongs to a cat lady, we also try to rescue the cat. As a country, we work hard for our money, wish our loved ones well, and pray for peace."
After Winfrey criticized him, the Trump campaign shared a letter she wrote in 2000 praising his potential as a president.
"If only we were running for office," Winfrey wrote. "What a great team!"
"In a 2023 interview, Winfrey stated, "I might have thought it 23 years ago.""
In Chicago, Oprah emphasized the importance of honesty when expressing her belief that "values and character are crucial."
"In leadership and life, Winfrey emphasized that decency and respect are crucial in 2024, and that common sense should prevail over loyalty to any individual."
