Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown removed the term 'women' from a bill concerning pregnancy.
Sherrod Brown's bill previously mentioned 'women' 22 times.
Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, silently removed the terms "pregnant women" and "pregnancy" from an insurance bill.
In 2015, the Ohio Democrat presented the first version of the Healthy Maternity and Obstetric Medicine Act, which included the word "women" 22 times, "maternity" 19 times, and "woman" twice.
By last year, he had removed all references to women before the bill's re-introduction. The 2023 version doesn't mention "women" or "woman" and has reduced references to "maternity" to only four.
The proposed amendment to the Public Health Service Act aims to create a special enrollment period for pregnant women to obtain health insurance.
The bill, which was introduced several times, including in 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2023, included a section titled "Findings and Purpose." In this section, the term "women" was mentioned 19 times in 2015 and 20 times in 2019.
Each year in the United States, millions of women experience a significant life event known as pregnancy.
Brown argued that treating pregnancy differently than other conditions constitutes sex-based discrimination, citing federal law.
The measure was revised, removing the lengthy section and replacing it with "pregnant person" and "pregnant individual" instead of "woman."
Despite being on the topic of pregnancy, the bill was scrubbed of references to women when contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital, and neither Brown's office nor his campaign provided an explanation.
Brown's campaign and office did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's questions about whether he believes that anyone other than women can become pregnant or if he could provide an example of a man who gave birth to a child.
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive a comment from the senator in time for publication.
Bernie Moreno, a Republican Senate candidate backed by former President Trump, is vying to replace Sherrod Brown in November. According to a statement from Moreno spokesperson Reagan McCarthy to Planet Chronicle Digital, Brown's decision to remove women from a bill focused on women's healthcare during pregnancy implies that he believes only women can become pregnant and seeks to eliminate the unique abilities of biological women.
"Brown is not only a far-left extremist but also a bona fide weirdo."
In Ohio, a red state that has previously voted for Trump, Brown is running for re-election. The Cook Political Report has rated his race as a "Toss Up," alongside Senate races in Montana and Michigan.
The Ohio senator's removal of "women" from the measure coincides with a national debate on gender identity, particularly in the areas of language, women's sports, and school appropriate content. This decision reflects a trend among Democrats to include transgender individuals, who may identify as something other than their biological sex, in policy discussions.
A woman might identify as transgender and say she is a man, even though only biological women can become pregnant.
Democrats have been criticized by Republicans for their ambiguity on inherently gendered subjects, with GOP politicians and pundits frequently questioning their opponents' definition of a woman and highlighting their unwillingness to provide a clear definition.
