Ohio governor to address Haitian migrant surge with increased law enforcement and additional health spending.
DeWine claims that local communities were not responsible for the increase in migrants.
Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio announced that he will allocate resources to assist with the growing number of Haitian migrants, who have legally arrived in Springfield under the Biden-Harris administration in recent years.
The federal government should assist local communities that were not involved in the decision to allow people to enter, but are now facing a large influx of individuals, as the numbers rise dramatically, according to DeWine.
The city's population was only 59,000 in the 2020 census, and officials have attributed the housing crisis and unsafe roads to the influx of migrants, as seen in the recent accident where an 11-year-old child was killed by a Haitian immigrant who ran into a school bus.
The Biden-Harris administration program has helped Haitians flee their violent, unstable countries, but DeWine supports it despite the problems it has caused in the community.
""I want to make it clear that I am not against this program," DeWine stated, as his family runs a charity in Haiti."
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost ordered his office to explore legal options to prevent the federal government from sending an unlimited number of migrants to Ohio communities.
Springfield has grown significantly due to migrants, and Yost questioned the limits of the federal government's power to handle the influx. He wondered if the government could redirect the migrants to Ohio instead.
A limiting principle must exist, and we will discover a way to bring this disaster before a federal judge, Yost stated.
He stated that the problem is not with the migrants themselves, but with the large number of them arriving in a brief timeframe.
Over the course of two years, DeWine pledged a total of $2.5 million for the county health department and other health care centers facing an influx of immigrants, as well as additional resources for law enforcement.
The 2024 presidential race for the White House has centered on Springfield, with Trump raising allegations that Haitian migrants are stealing pets and geese from residents. However, city officials have refuted these claims.
Local residents have been calling on city officials to act against the immigrants, who have angered them.
"During a recent city council meeting, Anthony Harris, 28, stated, "I observe the events taking place in the streets. I also notice you sitting comfortably in chairs and suits. However, I challenge you to leave your comfortable surroundings and take action. The Haitians are running into trash cans, buildings, and flipping cars in the middle of the street, and I find it difficult to understand how you can be content with this situation.""
