Newsom, Biden's Top Surrogate, Now Campaigning for Harris.
The first Trump-Harris debate will take place on Tuesday night in a crucial general election battleground state of Pennsylvania.
Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, is once again campaigning for the presidency.
As a high-profile Democrat and two-term governor, he played a key role as one of President Biden's top surrogates during the re-election campaign.
Since Vice President Kamala Harris replaced Biden as the Democratic Party's 2024 ticket leader seven and a half weeks ago, Newsom has mostly been absent from the campaign trail, appearing only at the DNC in Chicago without a speaking role.
Until now.
Four Democratic governors, including Gavin Newsom of California, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Roy Cooper of North Carolina, and Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, will be present in the debate spin room to support the vice president.
On Sunday, Newsom was in New York to headline a fundraiser for Harris and also made media appearances on behalf of the vice president and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, her running mate. Prior to his stop in Philadelphia.
"In an interview on "CBS Mornings," Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted the unprecedented actions of Vice President Kamala Harris in the past eight weeks, stating that she has closed the gap and expanded the map of the United States."
After Trump's poor showing in the June debate against Biden, Newsom defended the president as a prominent surrogate.
Biden's stilted debate performance sparked doubts about his fitness to continue as president for another four years, prompting a growing number of Democrats to urge him to abandon his re-election bid. Biden, under mounting pressure from his own party, made a momentous decision on July 21 to end his campaign and back his vice president.
Newsom stated that his longtime friendship and working relationship with Vice President Harris would make him just as enthusiastic about campaigning for her as he was for Biden.
"We have known each other for a decade before we both entered politics. One of my oldest friends. Therefore, it is a no-brainer," Newsom stated during the first night of the DNC at Chicago's United Center arena. "I am as needed. But obviously, all in."
At the time, Newsom stated that he may not be asked by the Harris campaign to campaign for her.
The governor stated, "We'll see. Since everyone is out there doing everything."
Fast-forward three weeks, and Newsom's back on the campaign trail.
