New Matt Gaetz measure may bring restitution to victims harmed by criminal migrants.
Millions of illegals have been allowed into the country by the Biden-Harris administration, resulting in a migrant crime epidemic, according to Matt Gaetz.
Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz is set to introduce a contentious bill this week that seeks to give federal judges the authority to compensate victims of illegal immigrants, potentially altering the legal framework for immigration-related crimes.
The ALIEN Act aims to modify the Immigration and Nationality Act, which has undergone numerous amendments and serves as the legal basis for U.S. immigration policy, outlining the processes for visa issuance, admission, deportation, and naturalization.
"The Biden-Harris administration has allowed millions of illegals to enter the country and has resulted in a migrant crime epidemic," Gaetz stated. "My proposed legislation, the ALIEN Act, will empower federal judges to compensate Americans who have been harmed by illegals through restitution."
The bill emerges as Republicans intensify their efforts to bolster border security before the 2024 election. Trump, the GOP's presidential hopeful, has long championed stricter border security and promised to initiate mass deportations if elected in November.
In recent years, some undocumented individuals have been charged with serious offenses against American citizens, which Republicans have attributed to the Biden-Harris administration's lax immigration policies.
Despite the efforts of local news outlets and the GOP-led House Judiciary Committee, an illegal Venezuelan migrant with suspected gang ties who has committed 22 crimes in six months in New York City remains undeported.
In June, a 12-year-old Houston girl, Jocelyn Nungaray, was allegedly strangled to death by two illegal immigrants from Venezuela. Similarly, the high-profile killing of 22-year-old Georgia college student Laken Riley earlier this year also sparked outrage among Republican lawmakers.
"The crisis will intensify under a Kamala-Walz administration, as they prioritize their voter base over the safety and security of Americans, according to Brandon Judd of the National Border Patrol Council. This decision infuriates every Border Patrol agent."
Since 2021, there has been a rise in the number of criminal illegal migrants attempting to cross the southern border and apprehended by agents, with approximately 13,000 being caught in Fiscal Year 2024, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.
Previously convicted of assault, battery, domestic violence, manslaughter, homicide, or sexual offenses, migrants were discovered.
Border apprehensions had been declining before Fiscal Year 2021, data also shows.
