Military experts and security personnel assess the threat to Trump following the latest assassination attempt.
The latest attempt on Trump's life resulted in no harm to him.
The latest attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump has prompted security and military experts to comment on the challenges the U.S. Secret Service faces in safeguarding the former president.
Golf courses are notoriously difficult to secure due to their wide open areas, as former SWAT commander and sniper team leader Josh Schirbard told Planet Chronicle Digital.
"The numerous routes of entry and the abundance of wooded areas, shrubs, and other landscape features on golf courses make it challenging to detect an assassination attempt. However, using terrain masking and distance as allies can increase the chances of a successful long-range rifle shot."
An investigation by the FBI is underway following an attempted assassination on Trump, which occurred near the former president at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old suspect, was apprehended on Sunday following his escape from the scene.
On Sunday, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw informed reporters that the gunman was approximately 300 to 500 yards away from Trump and was armed with an AK-47 style rifle. However, a U.S. Secret Service agent spotted the suspect and "engaged" them.
Schirbard stated that there are challenges with taking that kind of shot using the AK-47 rifle, which fires a 7.62mm round and is one of the most widely used weapons globally. Despite its reliability and an effective range of 700 yards, the AK-47 is not known for its accuracy.
"The shooter's identity and experience remain unknown, but we know that with a 30-round magazine, such attempts typically result in only 1-3 rounds hitting the target before it goes out of sight. This suggests an amateur attempt. Professional long-range snipers do not typically leave their gear behind like this possible shooter."
According to Chad Robichaux, a former Force Recon Marine and Department of Defense (DoD) contractor, the weapon used by the suspect could have been effective at approximately 1,000 yards.
"If the shooter had any decent skills, he was certainly within range to kill President Trump, assuming it was a rifle with a caliber between 5.56 and 7.62, Robichaux said."
Robichaux pointed out that even a novice Marine should be able to hit a human-sized target with a shot of 500 yards without a scope.
The incident occurred while Trump was traveling between the 5th and 6th hole of the course, which means that unlike the previous attempt on his life in Pennsylvania, when he was stationary, the timing of when shots began to be fired was crucial, as he could have continued getting closer to the threat as he progressed through the course.
Mark "Oz" Geist, a bestselling co-author of "13 Hours" and a security and military consultant, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the scope of the attack may not have had a significant impact.
"A semi-automatic replica of a Kalashnikov rifle, allegedly obtained from a final firing position at Trump International Golf Course, where former President Donald Trump was playing golf, has a maximum effective range of 380 yards with iron sights. While a scope may not increase the maximum effective range, it can provide the shooter with greater accuracy."
"The pictures also show a chain-link fence with a backpack and another carrying case attached to it, which has been marked as containing ceramic plates, with a hole left for shooting. This setup indicates that the potential shooter had positioned these items defensively, possibly anticipating being attacked and receiving return fire from the Secret Service."
An "evil monster" made an attempt on Trump's life for the second time in two months, but he was unharmed in the incident, according to senior campaign advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wile.
Fortunately, no one was harmed at the Golf Course. President Trump and his entourage are unharmed thanks to the exceptional efforts of the United States Secret Service.
