Kamala Harris' running mate consideration no longer includes North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.
Vice President's veepstakes had Cooper as a top contender.
This election season, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is no longer being considered as Vice President Kamala Harris's running mate.
On Monday evening, the New York Times reported that Governor Cooper had informed Harris' team about his decision to withdraw.
North Carolina's decision was not the right time for me, as stated by Cooper in a Monday evening release.
I strongly support Vice President Harris' campaign for President and was honored to be considered for this role.
"This wasn't the right time for me to potentially be on a national ticket with North Carolina," the Democrat stated. "As I've said from the beginning, she has an outstanding list of people to choose from, and we'll all work to ensure her victory."
In recent days, Cooper was viewed as a top contender for Harris' potential running mates. After Biden dropped out of the race and Harris launched her campaign, her team sent vetting materials to Cooper, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The governors of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, and Arizona, as well as Sen. Mark Kelly, were reportedly given vetting materials.
Earlier on Monday, Mitch Kokai, senior political analyst at the John Locke Foundation, told Planet Chronicle Digital that North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper was considered a "good match" for Kamala Harris.
Kokai explained that Democrats are likely to view Roy Cooper as a suitable match for Kamala Harris due to several reasons. Firstly, Cooper can help secure North Carolina's 16 electoral votes, which other candidates cannot achieve.
"Since 2000, he has won six statewide elections in a state that has trended right, which is an impressive accomplishment for a Democrat."
In recent years, North Carolina's political analyst has labeled Cooper as the Democrats' most promising figure.
Kokai stated that Cooper presents a calm, sober, and constrained personality that could help counter criticism about Harris' interactions with interviewers and the public, as he offers a clear demographic contrast to her.
The Harris campaign and Cooper's office were contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for comment.
Planet Chronicle Digital's Audrey Conklin and Michael Lee contributed to this report.
