Kamala Harris' new climate advisor expressed reservations about having kids due to climate change risks.
In September, the Harris campaign appointed Thorndike as its climate engagement director.
Kamala Harris' 2024 campaign appointed a new climate director who frequently states that the effects of climate change are preventing her from having children.
Camila Thorndike, who previously worked in the Senate managing the climate portfolio of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., was appointed as the climate engagement director for the Harris for President campaign in September 2024, as per her LinkedIn page.
Thorndike stated that she considers climate change a factor when deciding whether to have kids prior to joining the Harris campaign.
In 2018, Thorndike, the D.C. campaign director for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, shared her experience of seeing the climate 'hockey stick' graph for the first time at the age of 15. She realized that the skyrocketing arrow of temperature would occur in her lifetime, and all of the big milestones of life she was looking forward to would be in the context of this global crisis. This led to the question of whether or not to have kids and where to put down roots, which is still a big question for her.
In November 2019, Thorndike stated that the issue was a "moral dilemma that keeps me awake at night."
"I have always been someone who enjoys children and loves the idea of a family, but my logical mind and the facts of the future I can see bearing down on us are not supportive of the life I would want for them," she told Yahoo News at the time.
In an August 2022 episode of the "My Climate Journey" podcast, Thorndike discussed the link between having children and the potential impact of climate change on the future.
"I realized that around the time I would be considering having kids, in my 30s, the crisis would escalate. This made me realize that the grownups were not coming to save us and my generation would have to fight to take the wheel."
In a Washington Post article discussing the impact of climate change on children, the new Harris campaign official expressed concern about her own potential kids experiencing climate-related suffering.
"She stated, "My desire to safeguard my hypothetical child from suffering stems from a place of love. While life is not devoid of suffering, I want to ensure that the joys, peace, and goodness that bring me the most happiness in life will be accessible in 20, 30, and 40 years.""
During a discussion at the "Fight for Our Freedoms" event in September 2023, Harris acknowledged this idea.
According to Harris, young leaders have discussed with her a term they call 'climate anxiety,' which refers to the fear of the future and uncertainty about whether it is wise to consider having children or pursuing aspirations such as buying a home.
In July, a clip of a comment made by Donald Trump Jr. sparked criticism from Harris's detractors.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, who is now former President Trump's running mate, wrote: "It's almost like these people don't want young people starting families or something. Really weird stuff."
Elon Musk, billionaire and X owner, wrote on his platform that Shamala's philosophy as an extinctionist would logically lead to a de facto holocaust for all of humanity.
