JD Vance pledges to prevent Trump from enforcing a federal abortion ban and would veto it if it reached his desk.
Ohio Sen. JD Vance pledged on 'Meet the Press' that he and Trump would not enforce a federal abortion ban if they were elected.
Ohio Sen. JD Vance pledged that if former President Trump were re-elected, he would not impose a federal abortion ban and would veto any such measure that came his way.
In an interview on "Meet the Press," host Kristen Welker questioned Vance about the Democrats' argument that Donald Trump would impose a federal ban on abortion if elected, and asked if he could commit to not doing so if he and Trump were elected.
"I am fully committed to that, Kristen. Donald Trump has made it abundantly clear on the abortion issue. It's crucial to examine the differences between what Donald Trump said on the abortion question and what Kamala Harris and the Democrats have stated. Donald Trump's goal is to put an end to the cultural conflict surrounding this topic."
If California wants to have a different abortion policy from Ohio, then Ohio must respect California, and California must respect Ohio. Donald Trump believes that individual states should make their own decisions on this issue, as it is important to avoid federal conflict. The federal government should focus on reducing food and housing prices, as these are important issues that Kamala Harris has failed to address.
Vance was questioned by Welker regarding Republicans' promise to keep lobbying Trump for a federal abortion ban if he is re-elected, and whether Trump would veto such legislation.
Vance stated that it's crucial to make it clear that he wouldn't back that.
"But would he veto it?" Welker pressed.
Vance stated that as the president of the United States, if you do not support it, you must veto it.
"Would he veto a federal abortion ban?" Welker inquired again.
Vance continued, "He explicitly stated that he would."
Vance's interview took place after the Democrats held their convention in Chicago last week, during which Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted her nomination for the presidential ticket. In her acceptance speech on Thursday evening, Harris emphasized that Democrats are campaigning against Trump because he would impose a federal abortion ban if re-elected, a claim she cited as a key reason for her candidacy.
Donald Trump's agenda includes limiting access to birth control, banning medication abortion, and enacting a nationwide abortion ban, potentially forcing children who have survived sexual assault to carry pregnancies to term. This is happening in our country, and it is not over yet.
Trump has stated that he would not impose a federal abortion ban, but rather leave the issue of abortion laws to individual states. During his presidency, Trump urged Congress to pass a 20-week ban on abortions.
The GOP's 2024 platform emphasizes the preservation of life and returning power to the states when it comes to developing laws regarding abortion, with only one mention of the topic.
Our platform proudly stands for families and life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied life or liberty without due process, and that the states are, therefore, free to pass laws protecting those rights. After 51 years, because of us, that power has been given to the states and to a vote of the people. We will oppose late-term abortion while supporting mothers and policies that advance prenatal care, access to birth control, and IVF (fertility treatments).
