JD Vance, a former Never Trumper, has been chosen as Vice President to influence the future of MAGA.
Which Ohio senator are you referring to?
All along, my Spidey sense indicated that Donald Trump would choose JD Vance as his running mate.
The freshman senator was viewed by him as a populist conservative in his own image, an articulate speaker who could aid in solidifying Trumpism as the future of the Republican Party. Additionally, he had a potent supporter in Donald Trump Jr.
After the assassination attempt on Trump last weekend, I had a moment of doubt.
The former president had started saying that he needed someone who could help him get elected. However, given the heightened awareness of someone who's been shot that his choice might have to immediately take over as president, I thought Trump might reconsider and tap the far better known and more experienced Marco Rubio. Unfortunately, nope.
Vance possesses a military credential, having served in Iraq, which his opponents do not have. Additionally, although he hails from Ohio, he speaks with a Midwestern accent.
Winning Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin is crucial for President Biden's re-election, as his own party leaders privately believe his chances are slim.
Both Vance and Rubio made disparaging remarks about Trump in 2016, with Vance comparing him to Hitler. Despite this, the former president has since reconciled with both men.
Vance faces the challenge of being unknown to most ordinary voters due to his inexperience, as he was only recently elected to public office in 2022.
Vance has acknowledged his past mistake of torching Trump and expressed his happiness to have been proven wrong when he met the former president. He has also adjusted his views on abortion to align with the MAGA agenda.
The Biden campaign accused Vance of being a Trump loyalist who would go to great lengths to support the MAGA agenda, even if it meant breaking the law and putting the American people at risk.
In his 2022 campaign, Vance stated that he would vote to establish a national abortion ban at 15 weeks, but he also supports certain exceptions. Trump, on the other hand, opposes a national ban and maintains that the Supreme Court should continue to regulate abortion, leaving it up to the states.
Trump has expressed reservations about North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum as a potential running mate, citing Burgum's strict abortion restrictions and lack of name recognition, as well as North Dakota's small number of electoral votes.
Trump, while speaking at a rally with Rubio, stated that the constitutional restriction on two candidates from the same state could be easily overcome, but it was still a challenge that should be avoided.
Yesterday's announcement sequence was unusual. Both Rubio and Burgum, presumably with Trump's approval, received calls stating they were no longer contenders, leaving Vance as the last remaining candidate.
Trump may have recognized this because he informed Vance before the scheduled 4:30 ET time and Vance was informed he was the chosen one only 20 minutes before Trump made the announcement public.
For political junkies, Vance is now the instant frontrunner for 2028.
And I’ve learned once again to trust my Spidey sense.
