House committee requests internal records on Harris's role in border crisis: 'Complete failure'
Some Republicans and media outlets have labeled Harris as the 'border czar'.
The House Oversight Committee, comprised of Republicans, is probing Vice President Kamala Harris' involvement in managing the southern border crisis by requesting that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) share any correspondence with her office regarding illegal immigration.
According to Chairman James Comer, the mass illegal migration under the Biden-Harris Administration has resulted in numerous Americans being murdered, sexually assaulted, and suffering serious bodily injuries at the hands of illegal aliens.
"To comprehend Vice President Harris's role in the worst border crisis in American history, the Committee seeks documents and communications."
In 2021, as the number of migrants at the southern border increased rapidly, President Biden announced that Vice President Harris would be responsible for addressing the root causes of migration, including climate change, poverty, and violence, which the administration believed were driving people north.
The VP has been asked to lead efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle to address the migration to our southern border, as she is the most qualified person to do it.
Since her appointment, Harris has been labeled the "border czar" by media outlets and Republicans, despite the White House's rejection of the title. She has become a figurehead alongside DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for the crisis.
As the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, Republicans have focused on her handling of the border crisis, which has resulted in record encounters at the southern border. They argue that these numbers are a direct consequence of the Trump administration's border protections being rolled back and the implementation of what they call "open border" policies.
Harris' history of advocating for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants and her prior comments suggesting that immigration enforcement should be reworked were criticized as "abysmal" in a letter to Miller.
The committee aims to determine if Vice President Harris has taken any actions to address the worst border crisis in American history, according to the letter.
The committee is requesting all documents and communications between U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Executive Office of the Vice President regarding the southwest border or illegal immigration.
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from CBP and Harris' office when requested a comment.
Since President Biden signed an executive order limiting asylum claims in June, there has been a significant decrease in the number of asylum seekers.
The White House has reported a significant decrease in encounters and an increase in removals, with over 50,000 people returning to their home countries. Additionally, a project initiated by Vice President Harris to encourage private-sector investment in the region has seen over $5.2 billion committed since May 2021 from over 50 companies and organizations. However, it is unclear how much of this decrease is due to Harris' efforts.
Republicans have been accused by the administration of not providing enough funding and failing to pass immigration reform. This dispute has carried over into the campaigns, with the Trump and Harris campaigns clashing over the border narrative.
Last week, at a rally in Atlanta, Harris criticized former President Trump, stating that despite his claims of securing the border, his actions do not match his words.
The former president "tanked the bipartisan deal because he thought it would help him win an election," she charged, and she pledged as president to "bring back the border security bill that Donald Trump killed."
Trump's running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance, criticized Harris during a trip to the border.
"It's hard to believe how bad the Kamala Harris administration's policies have been at the southern border until you see it for yourself," Vance stated in Cochise County, Arizona.
