Harris' VP choice faces criticism over old calls to move 'most dangerous terrorists' to US detention centers.
Previously, Gov. Tim Walz expressed his desire to close the Guantanamo Bay prison.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, chosen by Vice President Kamala Harris as her running mate, opposed a 2009 bill that prohibited the transfer of inmates from Guantánamo Bay to the US and maintained that American facilities were capable of housing the alleged terrorists.
At the time, the MinnPost reported that Walz voted against a Republican-led measure to block the transfer of detainees from the Gitmo facility near Cuba to the United States, as part of an effort to authorize transfers to the US for trial as part of President Obama's plan to close the terrorist prison.

The Free Beacon, which exposed the vote this week, also reported on his remarks from the same year, where he dismissed concerns about the dangers of transferring Gitmo detainees to the US, stating that they could receive medical care at the Federal Medical Center in Rochester.
Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, an Air Force veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee, criticized Walz for advocating the closure of Gitmo, stating that his past actions have endangered American safety and national security.
According to Sam Rogers, an Army veteran and government affairs director at the Foundation for Government Accountability, Tim Walz has been criticized for consistently lying about evading war in Iraq and has voted multiple times to shut down Guantanamo Bay and relocate the world's most dangerous terrorists to the US.
According to MPR News, Walz stated that he wanted the facility to be shut down and considered it a significant hindrance to achieving peace in the Middle East.
The Minnesota Democrat stated that if all procedures are followed, as they have been with others, and the legal avenues are clear, the professionals can handle it.
This week, Guantanamo Bay was once again in the news after Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reversed a plea deal agreed upon by Pentagon prosecutors with three of the terrorists responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks, who are currently being tried in the facility. According to the Times, there are approximately 30 detainees still held there.
After serving as a lawmaker in the House, Walz became the governor of Minnesota and faced increased scrutiny.
Vice President Kamala Harris chose him to be her running mate for the 2024 Democratic presidential ticket, sparking a wave of evaluations and examination of his past actions on various topics, including immigration and military service.
"As a governor, coach, teacher, and veteran, he has delivered for working families like his own. We will build a great partnership, Harris said in a statement. "We start out as underdogs, but I believe together, we can win this election.""
